A long-standing community-focused hospital in Portland, Oregon, is currently seeking a Principal Veterinarian to lead their medical team. This position can be structured as a three- or four-day workweek, offering a balance between professional leadership and personal well-being.
Role Overview
The Principal Veterinarian is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the hospital’s medical and operational functions, working closely with the Practice Manager to ensure high-quality care, team development, and overall efficiency. This leadership role combines clinical responsibilities with team mentoring and strategic planning.
Key Responsibilities
Medical Leadership & Oversight
- Deliver and maintain high standards of patient care and client service
- Ensure compliance with veterinary medical practices and hospital protocols
- Support a positive hospital environment focused on quality, safety, and collaboration
Team Management
- Provide clinical mentorship and professional development for associate doctors
- Participate in talent acquisition, onboarding, and ongoing team training
- Lead regular team meetings and ensure clear, open communication
Operational Support
- Partner with the Practice Manager on budgeting, staffing, and scheduling
- Monitor productivity and implement strategies for efficiency and profitability
- Resolve client or employee conflicts effectively and professionally
Compliance & Safety
- Ensure adherence to state and federal veterinary regulations
- Maintain up-to-date licensure and support compliance among all clinical staff
- Oversee hospital safety in accordance with OSHA and DEA guidelines
Community Engagement
- Represent the hospital in local outreach and marketing initiatives
- Foster relationships within the community to enhance the hospital’s visibility and reputation
Qualifications
Required:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent
- Active veterinary license in the state of Oregon (in good standing at start of employment)
- Minimum 5 years of experience in clinical practice
- Prior experience mentoring associate veterinarians and leading medical teams
- Valid DEA license (or eligibility to obtain)
Preferred:
- Experience in practice ownership or hospital leadership
- USDA Accreditation
- Strong background in surgery, dentistry, and general practice

- Proficient in veterinary software and digital records systems
Working Environment & Physical Requirements
- Onsite hospital-based role; not eligible for remote work
- Hospital environment may include exposure to noise, odors, pet waste, and animals under stress
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks such as standing, kneeling, and handling pets
- Full-time position requiring 40+ hours per week, including some evenings and weekends
