Physical Therapist

Job Responsibilities:

Conduct comprehensive physical therapy evaluations to assess mobility, strength, balance, and functional physical limitations within an inpatient psychiatric setting.

Develop and implement individualized physical rehabilitation care plans that align with the patient's overall psychiatric treatment goals and behavioral constraints.

Address physical symptoms commonly associated with serious mental illness and psychotropic medications, such as tremors, catatonia, extra pyramidal side effects, and metabolic changes.

Provide safe, trauma-informed manual therapy and therapeutic exercises, maintaining deep awareness of de-escalation protocols and behavioral triggers.

Lead individual or group therapeutic movement, posture, and body awareness sessions designed to reduce patient anxiety, manage somatic pain, and improve overall physical well-being.

Collaborate actively with the interdisciplinary psychiatric teamincluding psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, social workers, and recreational therapists to coordinate holistic patient care.

Assess the need for, prescribe, and train patients and unit staff on the safe use of assistive devices, orthotics, or adaptive mobility equipment.

Maintain timely, legally compliant clinical documentation and daily progress notes in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system according to facility and regulatory standards.

Participate in crisis intervention and milieu management as required, ensuring a safe physical environment for both patients and healthcare staff.

Educate patients, families, and designated caregivers on post-discharge physical wellness strategies and safely transferring mobility goals back into the community.

Engage in quality improvement initiatives, safety audits, and peer reviews to optimize rehabilitative outcomes and minimize physical injury risks within.

Education: Graduate from a School of Physical Therapy which is approved by the American Physical Therapy Association Accreditation Board. Successful completion of State Board Examination of West Virginia. Possess a current state of West Virginia license or Temporary license. Once licensed must maintain current licensure requirements.

Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience working with individuals with serious mental illness.
