Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse (RN)

About the Position

This is a full-time position requiring a commitment of 48 hours per week, with overtime billable after 48 hours worked. The role involves direct patient care in a high-acuity environment, managing labor and delivery processes and caring for both the birthing patient and newborns.

Unit Information

Level II Trauma Center
Level IV NICU
34 Labor & Delivery Beds
Patient Types: High acuity cases including hypertension, magnesium administration, C-sections (33% C-section rate), preterm labor, and multiple births.
Up to 300 deliveries per month.
Patient Ratios per AWHONN guidelines:
- 1:1 for active labor
- 1:2 for non-active laboring patients
- 1:2-3 for antepartum, depending on acuity

Responsibilities

Manage high-risk labor and delivery scenarios, including triage of OB patients.
Perform cervical checks and interpret fetal monitoring strips.
Provide a second set of hands during births, assisting with newborn recovery as needed.
Collaborate with the Charge Nurse and other team members to ensure patient safety and effective care.
Assist in the operating room as needed and support the overall functioning of the unit.

Required Certifications

BLS
NRP
Intermediate Fetal Heart Monitoring (AWHONN)

Qualifications

Minimum of 2 years of experience in Labor and Delivery, with preference for candidates with 5+ years of experience.
Experience in high acuity environments, including labor management and delivery of high-risk OB patients.
Ability to function effectively as part of a team, with strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Familiarity with EPIC EMR, Alaris IV pumps, and other medical technology used in the unit.

Support on the Unit

CNA support for transport, restocking, and assistance in the OR.
Scrub Tech support (LPNs who are NRP certified).
Receptionist/Health Unit Coordinator present.
Charge Nurse available for oversight and to assist during high-volume periods.
Dedicated Break Nurses scheduled for each shift.
Resource RN available as needed.
RT available 24/7 for high-risk deliveries.

Scheduling and Orientation

Weekend rotation required every other week, but may vary based on staffing needs.
Holidays will be expected on a fair and equitable basis.
Standard shift times: 0700-1930 and 1900-0730.
Orientation includes traditional training and 2 weeks of unit-specific orientation with an additional week of independent practice.

Additional Information

Free parking provided in designated areas.
Scrubs are provided by the facility and must not be worn outside of the workplace.
