Principal Systems Safety Engineer

About the Role The Principal System Safety Engineer role is based on the Air and Space team in Tucson, AZ. This role is responsible for ensuring product safety throughout the product life cycle, from design to demilitarization, and for managing safe operation, maintenance, and testing processes. Responsibilities Analyze engineering hardware, mechanical and electrical drawings and schematics to assess fault tolerance, latent hazards, and safety requirement compliance. Partner with system test, tactical operations, and maintenance teams to ensure proper administrative safety controls are in place. Support integrated product teams and lines to eliminate hazards or provide effective controls. Collaborate with Program Management and government approval authorities throughout design, fabrication, integration, testing, production, and disposal phases. Develop a System Safety Program and perform analyses primarily in accordance with Mil-Std-882. Monitor program technical execution and interface with stakeholders such as customers, program offices, subcontractors, and vendors. Prepare Safety Assessment Reports and Safety Program Briefs for customer approval and brief program safety at technical reviews. Interpret system requirements, customer specifications, and military standards to prepare internal and customer reports describing various analyses relevant to the System Safety program. Qualifications – Must Have Bachelor’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of relevant Systems Engineering or Safety Engineering experience. Advanced degree may substitute for additional experience as required. Experience with System Safety Engineering, Systems Engineering, Software or Firmware Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or equivalent Safety Engineering. Experience with DoD System Safety Programs (e.g., MIL‑STD‑882). Active and transferable U.S. government‑issued Secret security clearance required prior to start date; U.S. citizenship required. Qualifications – We Prefer Experience implementing system and software safety in an Agile Development environment. Interpersonal and project‑management skills with the ability to manage a safety program and direct safety personnel. Experience with Earned Value Management Systems (EVMS) and Proposal Development. Six years’ experience with a Master’s degree in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). Benefits Competitive salary range: $107,500 – $204,500 USD.
