Laboratory Coordinator North Alabama Medical Center Job Type: Full-Time Overview North Alabama Medical Center is a 263‑bed facility that offers the community’s only open‑heart surgery site, a full line of women’s and children’s services, and comprehensive medical and imaging services. The hospital is a Certified Chest Pain center and has been recognized as a Primary Stroke Center of Excellence. The 24‑hour emergency department is the primary referral center for major trauma in northwest Alabama. Location Florence, Alabama. Position Summary The Laboratory Coordinator shall perform clinical laboratory tests, instruct personnel as assigned, and maintain laboratory quality. Responsibilities include LIS system maintenance, laboratory quality assurance, diagnostic testing, and technical support. The coordinator upholds the highest standard of patient care and independent judgment. Job Requirements Minimum Education: Associate’s in Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) or Bachelor’s in Medical Technology (MT); Bachelor’s in Medical Laboratory Science preferred. Required Certifications: American Medical Laboratory Technologist (AMLT) certification required within one year of hire; ASCP or equivalent preferred. Essential Functions Follow standardized procedures and prepare samples for testing. Collect samples and analyze bodily fluids for abnormalities. Operate laboratory equipment efficiently. Analyze test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits; report/document results per standards. Perform automated tests using computerized instruments and automated equipment. Perform manual tests based on detailed instructions from a physician. Run tests and analyze results for reporting to patients, physicians, nurses, or other licensed professionals. Perform quality control work to ensure accuracy of equipment and tests. Assist Lab Assistants as needed. Analyze samples used for transfusions. Collect specimens, including blood from patients. Complete annual competencies in a timely manner. Perform instrument maintenance and troubleshooting. Maintain supplies. Report critical values promptly. Observe professional ethics; maintain confidentiality of patient and family information. Follow and enforce accepted safety practices for patients and hospitals. Report safety hazards and initiate appropriate action. Participate in safety instructional programs. Maintain compliance with CAP, state, federal, and other regulatory and accrediting agency standards. Demonstrate professional and independent judgment at all times. Assist with performance improvement activities and serve on teams as needed. Act as a liaison between LIS and HIS. Train and educate laboratory personnel on LIS. Provide technical support in solving procedural problems. Present in‑service lectures to laboratory and other professional staff. Nonessential Functions Review and comply with LifePoint Code of Conduct and all relevant company and division policies and procedures. Physical and Environmental Requirements Physical Dexterity and Effort: bending, stooping, climbing, keyboard data entry, kneeling, lifting/moving patients, reaching, repetitive foot and hand movements, running, sitting, squatting, standing, walking, pushing/pulling (0‑25 lb, 26‑75 lb, >75 lb), lifting/carrying (non‑patient) (0‑25 lb, 26‑75 lb, >75 lb). Visual, hearing, speaking, smelling, taste, and color vision: constant use and monitoring of color distinction, far/near vision, depth perception, hearing, speaking, smell, and taste discrimination. Biological hazards: exposure to bloodborne pathogens, communicable diseases, hazardous chemicals, and latex. Other environmental hazards: exposure to asbestos, lead, cytotoxic chemicals, dust, hazardous chemicals, gases, vapors, fumes, and hazardous medication.
