Clinical Nurse Specialist - Pediatric Hem/Onc/BMT

Job Function Summary Involves advanced expertise in evidence‑based nursing and practice in oncology, pediatrics, geriatrics, psychiatric/mental health, adult health, acute/critical care, and related specialties. Provides direct patient care, teaching, mentoring, consulting, research, management, and systems improvement. Influences outcomes by consulting all care providers and implementing improvements in health‑care delivery systems. Role Overview Advanced practice registered nurse serving as oncology and bone marrow transplant nursing clinical expert, leader, consultant, educator, and mentor for the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology/Bone Marrow Transplant unit at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. Leadership Responsibilities Consults and collaborates with department/unit leaders and health‑care professionals to improve care. Leads health‑system teams to advance the clinical practice of nurses and improve patient outcomes. Leads design, implementation, and evaluation of innovative models of care into practice. Designs, implements, and evaluates programs and initiatives aligned with the organization’s strategic priorities and regulatory requirements. Leads and participates in committees, work groups, and project teams related to clinical practice. Participates in professional organizations and contributes scholarly activities (presentations, publications, innovations). Participates in value analysis and evaluation of medical devices, therapy programs, and delivery models. Increases the visibility of UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital Nursing at local, regional, national, and international levels. Responsible for the written document for Magnet submission regarding clinical practice exemplars within the content area. Performs other duties as assigned. Nursing Practice Responsibilities Collaborates with the interprofessional team and leaders to ensure implementation of evidence‑based patient care, optimal communication methods, and continuous quality improvement. Creates and revises nursing policies, procedures, and standards of care incorporating evidence‑based practice to impact optimal patient/family outcomes. Leads clinical practice and quality improvement initiatives for a unit or program. Collects and analyzes data regarding patient care outcomes and trends. Collaborates with nurses to develop practice environments that support shared decision‑making and shared governance. Coaches the nursing staff on the development of critical thinking and clinical judgment skills. Creates a nursing care environment that stimulates continuous self‑learning, reflective practice, ownership, and accountability. Collaborates with the Nurse Professional Development team and others on content and operational design of orientation, clinical competencies, and other educational program development. Designs and evaluates innovative educational programs for patients, families, and groups. Provides mentorship for new skill acquisition, leadership, and support for professional development of the nursing staff. Provides formal and informal education for nurses and other health‑care professionals and students. Evaluates the impact of nursing practice and care models on fiscal and human resources. Provides clinical consultation to nurses, providers, and interprofessional team colleagues regarding nursing care of the oncology patient population. Partners with Nursing Quality & Analytics, Nurse Professional Development, Clinical Practice, and Research & Scholarship teams and other nurse leaders to meet department and health‑system strategic goals to advance nursing practice at UCSF. Direct Patient Care Responsibilities Applies current evidence‑based knowledge and skills for assessing, diagnosing, planning care for, and evaluating the plan of care for the specialty patient population. Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team using the nursing process to integrate the nursing perspective into a comprehensive plan of care for the patient/family. Identifies and prioritizes nursing care needs for a select population of patients/families. Facilitates care coordination and transitions for complex and vulnerable patients with oncology care needs. Required Qualifications Minimum of 5 years of recent clinical RN experience in the specialty area. Master’s degree from an accredited Nursing program. In‑depth knowledge of one or more clinical specialty areas, including diagnoses, treatments, standards of practice, and patient/family educational consulting and resources. Advanced knowledge of evidence‑based practice skills, including data collection, analysis, and reporting. Advanced critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to assess highly complex issues and develop multiple options for resolution. Advanced interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide education, training, and direction to nursing staff, and to develop positive working relationships with patients, families, providers, ancillary services, and departments. Advanced written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex and/or sensitive information clearly and concisely. Preferred Qualifications Specialty certification (e.g., Certified Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurse). Required Licenses & Certifications Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the State of California (CA BRN). Current American Heart Association CPR certification. Certified CA Clinical Nurse Specialist, or licensure/certification in another advanced nurse practice discipline. Active Association of Pediatric Hematology Oncology Nurses (APHON) provider status.
