City of Columbia, Missouri Career Opportunities Overview Assistant City Prosecutor in the Law Department. Under limited supervision provides legal counsel and representation to City management, staff and officials; prosecutes cases in Municipal Court and other courts of competent jurisdiction. Responsibilities Review cases involving violation of City Code; draft and sign charging documents when prosecution is warranted. Conduct legal research, review and draft legal documents and reports, including memorandums, pleadings, search warrants, and discovery responses. Interpret local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations. Render sound written and oral opinions. Perform detail-related work pertaining to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violations. Attend and represent the City in judicial proceedings related to the prosecution of municipal ordinance violations, including examination of witnesses, cross-examination of adverse witnesses, and oral argument before the Court on motions. Confer with citizens and defense attorneys regarding alleged ordinance violations and necessary corrective action. Confers with victims and witnesses in criminal cases. Conduct discovery, prepare witnesses and exhibits, conduct trial and post-trial appeal proceedings. Negotiate equitable resolutions for pending cases. Provide counsel and training to police officers, code enforcement officers, department heads and other city officials on issues related to municipal court prosecution. Prepare or assist in the preparation of City ordinances. Display high ethical standards and adhere to legal requirements; maintain integrity and perform essential functions as an officer of the court. Maintain the confidentiality of files, records and reports as required by law, City policy, and procedures. Attend conferences, seminars or other training for professional development; participate effectively in staff meetings. Perform office administration tasks (typing, filing, copying) and other duties as needed; maintain regular attendance and punctuality as essential functions. Demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy in performance of duties. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Work may involve assigning tasks to others; does not have disciplinary authority but may provide instruction and training and oversee work quality and task completion. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of local, state and federal laws, procedures and rules related to prosecuting violations; judicial procedures and rules of evidence; legal research sources. Skill in verbal and written communication; public speaking; conducting legal research; analyzing complex legal and factual situations. Ability to represent the city in public settings with logical, persuasive, and factually accurate arguments; handle stressful situations with professionalism; work independently; exercise discretion and good judgment; manage multiple tasks; empathize with crime victims; establish effective relationships; maintain confidentiality; proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe, and relevant case management systems such as MULES and Missouri Case.Net. Education and Experience Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school required. Minimum one-year prior experience as a prosecutor, criminal defense attorney, or other government legal experience preferred; other relevant experience may substitute for legal experience. Licenses and Certifications Valid driver’s license or reliable transportation to travel to court and training events. Qualification for access to Missouri Uniform Law Enforcement System (MULES) required. Work Environment Office or indoor environment; vehicle occasionally. Potential exposure to hostile or irate individuals and individuals with known violent backgrounds (sometimes). Physical Demands Typically sedentary; occasional lifting up to 10 pounds; ability to reach and file; ability to transfer between nearby work locations. Hours/Days Monday–Friday, 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.; some evenings may be required. Compensation Starting Salary: $35.30/hr–$43.43/hr, commensurate with training and experience. Pay Grade 111.
