Job Title
Employees in this classification perform semi-skilled work, frequently requiring heavy manual labor in the installation, operation, and maintenance of the City's Stormwater, Wastewater or Water systems.
Essential Job Duties
- Performs excavating and backfilling or excavation tasks utilizing hand and power tools.
- Performs installation of piping systems, structures, and appurtenances.
- Prepares materials, piping, and fittings for installation, replacement or repair.
- Assists in and performs the location and marking of existing underground facilities prior to excavation.
- Assists and perform cleaning, inspection, and testing of lines and systems.
- Assists in and performs maintenance operations of the City's utility systems, structures, and waterways.
- Installs, maintains, removes or replaces meters, values, gauges or other utility mechanical devices.
- Reads water meters and records water usage.
- Loads or unloads materials and supplies.
- Assists in maintaining inventory usage records.
- Assists in and performs restoration of disturbed concrete, asphalt and landscape areas.
- Operates and maintains hand and power tools associated with job tasks.
- Exercises independent objective judgment in calling for supervision or assistance in tasks.
- Assists in the removal of debris from canals.
- Requires regular attendance to scheduled work shifts.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Substantial knowledge of the use and care of simple manual and power hand tools.
- Ability to learn the use and maintenance of associated special equipment
- Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under varying climatic conditions.
- Ability to read and comprehend simple plans or sketches and utilize measuring devices.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
- Communicates with co-workers, management, citizens, and others in a courteous and professional manner.
- Conforms with and abides by all departmental and City regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions.
- Working knowledge of utility construction and/or water distribution, wastewater/stormwater collection systems.
- If placed within the Stormwater Division, ability to swim is mandatory.
Minimum Acceptable Education, Training & Experience
High school diploma or GED equivalent, Intermediate Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certificate; supplemented by one (1) year similar labor experience. Must hold a certification specific to the division assigned. For Water DivisionWater Distribution Level 3 Certification, for Wastewater DivisionClass C Wastewater Collection Certificate and for StormwaterFSA 1.
Position will be required to be on call and work after hours including holidays and weekends.
Preferred
1-year labor experience in plumbing, pipefitting, irrigation or similar.
Benefits
- The City currently contributes 100% of the employee cost and 50% of the dependent cost for participating in the City's medical plan, which is a High Deductible Health Plan. You may elect to establish an HSA with this plan, to which the City will contribute $750 annually, and an additional $250 upon completion of an employee wellness examination each year. The City also contributes 100% of the employee cost of the Dental HMO (DHMO) Plan.

- The City provides full-time employees with $50,000 of basic life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance.
- Short and long-term disability, vision, voluntary employee, spousal and dependent life insurance, identity theft, legal assistance, and other supplemental insurance plans are also available to you at group rates. Specific benefit information can be obtained through the Human Resources Department. You will become eligible for benefits on the first day of the month following 30 days of service.
- In addition to the above benefits, you will also earn paid time off (PTO) of 144 hours annually, which is accrued bi-weekly. After six (6) months of continuous service, PTO may be taken as earned and is retroactive to your start date.
