Staff Attorney

Organization Overview Neighbors Immigration Clinic (NIC) is an immigrant-led nonprofit law office providing high-quality, low-cost immigration representation while proactively organizing alongside immigrant communities to support the flourishing of Kentucky. Immigrants serve in leadership across both NIC’s staff and Board of Directors. NIC is an affiliate site of the Immigration Law and Justice Network, a national non-profit dedicated to providing quality immigration legal services throughout the nation. NIC has provided access to legal services across more than 30 Kentucky counties since 2019. Responsibilities Provide direct services, full representation, to a high volume of clients. Maintain a robust caseload focusing on humanitarian and family-based immigration cases to include: asylum, T/U visas, VAWA, adjustment of status applications, Special Immigrant Juvenile Status (SIJS), and naturalization. Represent clients in defensive and affirmative cases (before EOIR and USCIS), including bond proceedings and other matters in a detained setting, including in bond proceedings, and on appeal before the BIA and 6th Circuit Ct. of Appeals. Represent clients in federal court, including habeas petitions. Desired Skills and Abilities Meet with clients for initial consultations to determine eligibility for relief, preparing applications and/or court filings, and managing ongoing client communication. Perform administrative duties and paralegal functions for the majority of cases. Conduct community outreach presentations on issues surrounding immigration. Some presentations may occur during evening/weekend hours. Maintain an awareness and understanding of current legal and policy issues affecting immigrants in Kentucky. Supervise and work with volunteer attorneys and law students. Work with interpreters on a regular basis. Education and Licensure Requirements Must hold a Juris Doctorate (JD) from an accredited law school Active state bar license in any state Licensed, or willingness to get licensed, before the Executive Office of Immigration Review Valid driver’s license Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in Spanish and English Admission into, or willingness to work towards admission into, the Eastern and Western Federal Districts of Kentucky and the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Compensation & Benefits The salary range for this position is $60,000–$73,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
