Financial Counselor

Location: Hematology Oncology of Indiana Pay Range:$17.93 - $29.89 A Financial Counselor acts as a liaison between patients and the practice, coordinating payments, assisting with financial responsibilities, and ensuring accurate insurance benefit records in the electronic medical records (EMR) and billing software. Responsibilities Monitor and coordinate pre‑certification and prior authorization processes with insurance companies, including peer‑to‑peer and appeals. Review patient schedules and treatment plans to establish financial responsibility and confirm active insurance coverage. Generate estimates of service, communicate insurance benefits and patient fiscal responsibility, and obtain necessary income information for assistance programs. Identify and manage aging balances, establishing appropriate arrangements for outstanding balances. Explain forms and paperwork needed, such as waivers, treatment estimates, payment plans, and assistance applications. Maintain open, routine communication with providers, nursing staff, PSS staff, UM team, and coworkers via Teams, phone, email, and in person. Collaborate with outside entities to complete required forms and items timely, including urgent requirements. Assist patients with assistance and grant‑funded programs to secure financial aid. Support compliance with all federal and state laws related to patient care, billing, and collections. Maintain a neat and orderly work area, safe use of equipment, and adhere to AON and departmental policies and procedures. Perform additional duties and projects as assigned. Qualifications High school diploma or GED required; additional education or degrees are a plus. Minimum two years of healthcare experience, preferably in a clinical or business office setting. Experience with medical insurance verification, pre‑certification, and prior authorization. Understanding of medical terminology, ICD‑9, ICD‑10, and CPT codes. Cash handling and patient responsibility collection experience. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and organizational skills. Interpersonal effectiveness, diplomacy, conflict management, and diversity awareness. Self‑motivated, capable of working independently with limited supervision. Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and multitasking across multiple applications. Ability to work remotely as required and adapt to a fast‑paced, multi‑site environment.
