Fiberglass Laminator
The Fiberglass Laminator builds high-quality fiberglass components for boats by applying resin-saturated fiberglass materials to molds and ensuring strong, defect-free finished parts. This role combines hands-on craftsmanship with careful attention to detail, working with tools such as chop guns, rollers, and measuring gauges to achieve precise material application. The position involves mixing resins, preparing molds, pressing out air pockets, and removing cured products from molds while following safety, quality, and production standards in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Responsibilities
- Prepare required parts, molds, and raw materials so they are ready for production according to the schedule.
- Arrange materials in the correct order or pattern using documentation that may include numbers, letters, words, or pictures.
- Spray fiberglass and/or lay sheets of fiberglass onto part molds using a chop gun or manual methods.
- Press resin-saturated fiberglass layers into the mold and use rollers to smooth out wrinkles, voids, air bubbles, and air pockets.
- Use fiberglass chop guns safely and effectively to apply material to molds.
- Use hands, arms, and rollers to handle, install, position, and manipulate fiberglass materials within the molds.
- Use a mil gauge to measure gel coats and fiberglass thickness and ensure the correct amount of material is applied.
- Mix resins to the appropriate consistency and specifications for laminating operations.
- Insert spacing blocks and assemble two-part molds by strategically placing blocks and fitting one mold into the other as required.
- Remove cured fiberglass products from molds while protecting part integrity and mold condition.
- Maintain a clean, tidy, and organized material storage area within the assigned work zone.
- Participate in continuous improvement activities and cost-saving initiatives to enhance production efficiency and quality.
- Participate in Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S) and Quality initiatives and follow all related procedures.
- Operate material handling equipment such as platform trucks, forklifts, aerial work platforms, pallet jacks, and overhead hoists, as required and if qualified.
- Wear and properly use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), which may include respirators, gloves, chemical-resistant aprons, and chemical-resistant suits.
- Follow written and verbal work instructions, production orders, and safety guidelines with a high degree of accuracy.
- Collaborate with team members, supervisors, and support staff to coordinate work, resolve issues, and meet production targets.
- Maintain accurate, routine paperwork and basic computer entries related to production, materials, and quality checks.
- Remain focused and organized while working with multiple priorities in a fast-paced shop floor environment.
- Apply problem-solving and creative thinking skills to address production challenges, material issues, and process improvements.
Essential Skills
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED), or 1+ years of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Basic computer knowledge and ability to work with computer terminals.
- Ability to read, hear, interpret, and understand written and verbal instructions and communicate accurate information to others.
- Ability to complete routine paperwork with basic reading comprehension and writing skills.
- Strong reasoning skills, including the ability to research and resolve discrepancies and errors.
- High attention to detail and a strong focus on accuracy and organization.
- Ability to work as a proactive team player and self-starter with a continuous improvement mindset.
- Capability to remain focused while handling multiple priorities and interacting with multiple people.
- Physical ability to walk or stand for extended periods of time.
- Physical ability to frequently bend, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch, reach, climb, and lift or move up to 35 pounds.
- Vision abilities that include close vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
- Ability to wear required PPE, including safety glasses and respirators, and follow all safety procedures.
- Willingness and ability to work night shift hours from 5:00 pm to 3:30 am with a half-hour unpaid lunch on Monday through Thursday, and to work occasional overtime including non-scheduled workdays or irregular hours.
- Experience or ability to work safely around resins, fiberglass dust and cloths, epoxy, composites, and other chemicals.
- Comfort working in a non-climate-controlled shop environment with fluctuating temperatures, humidity, and varying noise levels.
- Ability to use fiberglass lamination tools such as chop guns and rollers.
- Ability to use a mil gauge to verify gel coat and fiberglass thickness.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Proficiency in MS Office applications, including Outlook, Excel, and Word.
- Familiarity with Materials Resource Planning (MRP) software and systems.
- Familiarity with modern warehousing practices and methods.
- Marine industry experience is preferred but not required.
- Experience operating material handling equipment such as forklifts, pallet jacks, aerial work platforms, platform trucks, and overhead hoists is beneficial.
- Demonstrated ability to contribute to EH&S and Quality initiatives.
- Experience working in a shop floor or manufacturing environment.
- Ability to maintain a high level of energy and apply creative thinking and problem-solving skills in daily work.
- Comfort working in a team-oriented environment focused on continuous improvement and cost savings.

Work Environment
This role is based on the night shift, working from 5:00 pm to 3:30 am with a half-hour unpaid lunch, Monday through Thursday, with occasional overtime as needed, including on non-scheduled days or at irregular hours. New hires should expect to train on the day shift from 5:00 am to 3:30 pm for up to 90 days before transitioning to nights. The position is located on a shop floor in a non-climate-controlled environment where temperature and humidity fluctuate with outdoor conditions, including frequent exposure to hot and humid conditions, particularly in the summer months. The noise level is generally moderate with occasional spikes. Employees frequently work around moving mechanical parts, resins, fiberglass dust and cloths, epoxy, composites, and other chemicals. Safety is a priority, and employees must wear safety glasses, steel toe boots, and other required PPE such as respirators, gloves, chemical-resistant aprons, and chemical-resistant suits while on the production floor. The work requires walking or standing for extended periods and frequent bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, crouching, reaching, climbing, and lifting or moving up to 35 pounds. The environment supports a structured, production-focused operation where adherence to safety, quality, and housekeeping standards is essential.

Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $19.00/hr.
