PT - Adult Education HSE-GED Adjunct Instructor
Salary: $27.00 per hour
Summary of Function: Grant Funded. Provide structured instruction for GED/HSE preparation classes in the Adult Education Program to help adult learners improve their TABE test scores and successfully pass the GED exams, ultimately earning their High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma. The instructor provides personalized support to students, fostering academic growth, career readiness, and successful transition to post-secondary education and training. Additionally, the role requires active participation in professional development to enhance instructional skills and ensure effective use of educational tools and resources. This is a part-time, grant-funded position.
Typical Duties:
- Serves Students. Provides instruction using appropriate strategies that demonstrate teaching excellence through evidence-based practices that foster student learning. Effectively integrates instructional and classroom technology to enhance teaching and learning. Deliver engaging, clear, and structured lessons aligned with GED/HSE preparation course standards across all core subjects—Reasoning Through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Science, Social Studies, Civics, and/or the Arizona Civics Test as assigned. Instruction will follow the Arizona Department of Education Adult Education Standards for each subject area to ensure quality and consistency. Prepare students to gain proficiency in the subject areas listed and improve their TABE/GED progress test scores by developing the skills needed to successfully navigate each subject's content and concepts. Improve test readiness through regular assessments, quizzes, Essential Education activities, and GED/TABE practice exams, focusing on building students' test-taking skills and confidence under exam conditions. Use TABE placement and progress results to inform and adjust instruction, providing targeted support where needed. Adapt teaching methods to meet diverse learner needs, incorporating digital platforms such as Essential Education and Canvas to enhance learning and promote digital literacy. Maintain and update the Canvas course shell weekly, actively encouraging student engagement with Canvas, Arizona Western College student email, and Essential Education platforms.
- Develops, plans, and delivers course content, administers assessments, and provides feedback and grades to students through the learning management system. Ensures that course content and materials are updated and aligned with current curriculum goals, student learning outcomes, and course objectives. Maintain clear communication with students regarding expectations, progress, and classroom policies. Provide individualized assistance to ensure students understand the material, stay motivated, and build effective study habits and career readiness skills, such as time management. Proactively support students by communicating with them via email, Zoom, or phone to provide additional help, especially if they are struggling or missing class. Maintain regular communication with students who are not attending and notify program staff for further intervention if a student stops attending for more than one week without prior communication. Track progress using classroom work, GED practice tests, and TABE assessments, offering constructive feedback to build confidence and academic success. Support students in accessing resources, including Arizona Western College advising, tutoring, career development, and AZ @ Work One-Stop shops to assist in pursuing educational and career goals.
- Maintains accurate records and submits reports on time, including grades and attendance, in accordance with institutional requirements, utilizing designated reporting tools. Collaborate with administrators and staff for coordinated student support. Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of student attendance and participation, submitting weekly attendance reports through Arizona Department of Education software, including but not limited to AAEDMS, for director approval. Ensure compliance with institutional policies and proper tracking of student engagement throughout GED/HSE preparation courses.
- Participate in ongoing professional development and training, including but not limited to Canvas and Essential Education, to ensure mastery of educational tools and enhance instructional effectiveness. Keep a written record of all professional development activities as assigned by the program director. Regularly report professional learning progress to the program director and apply newly acquired skills to improve student outcomes and overall program quality.
- Supports and participate in strategic planning initiatives and performs other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain an Arizona Adult Education Certificate
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a Valid Fingerprint Clearance Card
- Minimum of three years teaching experience
Additional Eligibility Requirements:
- Arizona Driver's License or Equivalent

Position Type & Work Schedule: Part-time, Adjunct Faculty Assignment time is dependent upon institutional need Instructional days and times are dependent upon the semester course schedule and institutional needs
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

- In-depth knowledge of the academic discipline being taught, Strong instructional and curriculum development skills tailored to adult learners
- Knowledge and understanding of effective teaching methods and learning theories
- Knowledge of curriculum design and assessment practices
- Knowledge of and ability to effectively utilize instructional technologies and learning platforms including learning management system
- Skill in current technologies and word processing, database, presentation, and spreadsheet software, specifically Microsoft Office applications, Windows, college system platforms, software and applications especially those specific to the department operations
- Skill and ability to be self-directed and to manage one's own time
- Skill and proficiency in planning and delivering engaging and effective instruction
- Skill in creating and grading assessments that accurately measure student learning
- Strong organizational skills to manage course materials, records, and administrative tasks
- Ability to complete all departmental and/or institutional mandatory training or development
- Ability to utilize appropriate instructional strategies and educational technology for various modalities
- Ability to work independently and contribute to a collaborative team environment
- Ability to provide assistance in a professional, civil, and supportive manner
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally, in writing, and in a public setting, and to relate to others in a professional manner
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of protected information and follow FERPA guidelines
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective, and collaborative relationships with individuals at all levels of the organization, students, and the public
- Ability to provide instruction for all levels of learners including foundation or introductory courses
- Ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues
- Ability to address and resolve issues related to teaching and student learning
- Ability to efficiently manage time to balance teaching, preparation, and administrative duties
- Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, faculty, students, and the public
Work Environment: Inside classroom, lab, or office environment with normal noise and lighting levels
Physical Demands:
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer
- Prolonged periods of standing and/or walking
- May lift, carry, push, and/or pull, at times a minimum of 10 pounds
- Occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and/or twist
- Must be able to navigate various departments of the organization's physical premises
Travel: May be required to travel to other locations using various modes of private, commercial, or fleet transportation, and as needed to support department and institutional needs Travel to additional campus locations to support instructional delivery and assignment
