R&D Test Engineer

Overview & Responsibilities The purpose of this job is to provide a focal point for coordination of Research and Development testing. The Test Engineer is the technical expert on the operation of the various R&D test rigs and auxiliary systems. The Test Engineer works with the project's technical leader and develops a test plan necessary to ensure a safe, functional test with all the required data acquired. The Test Engineer is responsible to perform all testing without damage to the equipment, personnel, or environment. Maintain the test facility to provide a safe and professional working environment. Direct personnel to assemble and instrument test stands, making modifications of stands if required. Oversee maintenance of assembly tools and calibration of measurement instrumentation. Obtain quotations and issue purchasing requisition requests when necessary. Assist with data collection, programming, and reports. Provide input on all development projects that involve testing. Provide leadership on continuous improvement within the test lab. Oversee all testing within the test facility. Background and Experience Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Engineering Technology, or equivalent degree. Understanding of mechanical design, assembly, and instrumentation of rotating machinery. Ten or more years of experience with the operation of turbo machinery. Knowledge of motors, compressors, steam turbines, bearings, gears, couplings, and oil systems. Ability to lead small teams, with demonstrated leadership ability to manage subordinates. Ability to maintain and control critical components being disassembled and assembled. Ability to read and understand technical drawings, blueprints, layouts, and schedules. Familiarity with technical issues routinely encountered during the test process. Ability to follow schedules and update accordingly. Computer skills (specifically MS Office/Lotus Notes). Fundamental knowledge of engineering materials and manufacturing processes is required. Good verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing. Exemplary work ethic, self-directed worker, disciplined, and dependable. Ability to learn quickly and adapt to a dynamic work environment. Well-developed time‑management skills, able to balance demand among various projects. Preferences: Welding, motor, pneumatic system, hydraulic system, pumps, cooler, filter, valve controls, and troubleshooting. Understanding of instrumentation and controls or PLC programming. Intermediate level computer literacy. Specific Job Responsibilities / Competencies Conduct oneself at all times in a manner befitting a professional organization. Review all safety notices and incidents with the team to prevent recurrence. Complete safety checks and job hazard analyses as needed. Perform 5‑S of areas. Operate equipment and auxiliary systems per established procedures and update them as necessary. Modify, overhaul, and install test stands as part of a safety‑first team. Plan activities and resources, ensuring compliance with best practices and accurate record‑keeping. Communicate deviations, problems, or delays to supervision in a timely manner. Advise supervision of assembly progress and resource needs. Devise methods and/or computer techniques to accumulate and analyze data. Estimate man‑hours, schedule assignments, and submit estimates to supervision. Ensure all records are updated relating to work performed. Complete pre‑test checks for readiness prior to testing. Initiate and execute efficiency improvements. Resolve most problems independently, but recognize when support is required. Provide tours of the test lab to internal and external personnel, including customers, vendors, and visiting VIPs. Maintain control of testing tooling and resources associated with test stands. Serve as subject‑matter expert on R&D testing, providing technical advice to teams on testing capabilities and limitations. Manage large‑scale testing activities, applying advanced planning and organizational skills. Demonstrate expert‑level knowledge of engineering and design principles. Provide technical support to other team members.
