Job Description

Fellowship Opportunity in Clinical Neuroimmunology & Multiple Sclerosis at Our Organization in Pittsburgh, PA

Fellowship Duration
  • Clinician track: 1 year
  • Clinician-scientist track: 3 years
Clinical and Research Engagement
  • Our Multiple Sclerosis Center is recognized as a comprehensive care facility by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS) and is an active participant in the Consortium of MS Centers.
  • The center offers extensive, multidisciplinary care for a varied patient population experiencing a wide array of clinical neuroimmunology conditions.
  • Currently, the MS Center is staffed by eight MS clinicians (MD, DO, PA-C, NP), three clinician-scientists, two psychiatrists, and a dedicated team of nurses, clinical support, and research personnel.
  • Situated within the UPMC Magee-Women's Hospital, the MS Center features an outpatient clinic and a 10-bed infusion unit. Patients have the opportunity to engage in clinical trials and a long-term prospective cohort study aimed at advancing precision medicine in MS.
  • Faculty will collaborate with each fellow to create a tailored training program that encompasses MS and clinical neuroimmunology patient care, exposure to multidisciplinary approaches, didactic sessions, and opportunities for teaching and research.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • The primary clinical setting for the fellowship will be the outpatient clinic at the Multiple Sclerosis Center.
  • In addition to the main clinical experience, fellows will occasionally provide consultations for complex neuroimmunology cases in the inpatient environment.
  • Fellows will not be required to be on call during evenings or weekends.
  • Additional clinical experiences will include neurorehabilitation, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neuropsychiatry, neuro-urology, neuro-gastroenterology, neuro-rheumatology, pediatric neuroimmunology, neuro-ophthalmology, neuro-otology, and women's neurology, along with a multidisciplinary autoimmune encephalitis clinic.

Research Opportunities

  • Fellows in the clinician-scientist track are expected to engage in research under faculty guidance in one of three areas: clinical research (including clinical trials, epidemiology, and observational studies), translational research (focusing on biomarkers, genetic studies, or pilot studies for innovative diagnostic or treatment methods), and data research (involving neuroimaging studies and the application of biostatistics, machine learning, and other computational techniques to clinical and translational research data).

Educational Activities

  • Scheduled educational sessions include biweekly neuroimmunology/neuroradiology case conferences, monthly combined adult and pediatric neuroimmunology conferences, a monthly journal club, weekly case discussions, and various other educational initiatives within the MS Center.
  • Fellows will have the chance to present at a national or international conference related to MS/neuroimmunology (such as ACTRIMS Forum, ECTRIMS, or CMSC).
  • There will also be opportunities for fellows to teach residents and medical students.

Application Deadline: Please refer to the SF match. Applications should be submitted during PGY3 for a start date of July 1 in PGY5 for adult neurology residents.

Eligibility Criteria: Candidates must have successfully completed an accredited adult neurology residency program (or its equivalent) in the United States (or Canada), have applied for and received an unrestricted medical license in Pennsylvania, and completed the necessary credentialing prior to the commencement of the fellowship. Please note that we do not currently sponsor visas.
