Job Overview

As an Associate Engineer at Cambrex, you'll launch your career in chemical engineering with the support of highly experienced engineers and scientists who are eager to mentor and guide you. In this role, you'll be immersed in every stage of bringing new products from the laboratory to full-scale manufacturing, gaining hands-on experience with batch processes and unit operations such as reactions, distillation, extraction, filtration, and drying. Under supervision of the department manager, the Associate Engineer will rotate through several key engineering roles such as Process, Production, Validation, Project, Environmental and Reliability in an approximate two-year period. The purpose of the Associate Engineer position is to provide recent college graduates with the opportunity to gain a broad overview of the core functions that are critical to the manufacturing and engineering support functions at Cambrex.


Responsibilities

Process Engineering (6 -12 months)

• • Perform scaling calculations for unit operations, assisting with the conceptual process design.
  • Participate in process reviews for operability, safety, and quality.
  • Support production campaigns through in-person observation.
  • Analyze production and laboratory data to assist with process understanding.
  • Assist with quality investigations and corrective action / preventative action implementation.
  • Support process improvement projects to reduce cycle time, increase yield, and improve quality.
  • Draft manufacturing documents: process flow diagrams, batch records, validation protocols, standard operating procedures, quality investigations, campaign reports.
• Environmental Engineering(3 - 6 months)
  • Special projects
• Production/Operations Engineering (6 - 9 months)
  • Revise Standard Operating Procedures
  • Troubleshoot operating processes
  • Update and revise batch records and process set-ups
  • Work on process yield or quality improvement projects
  • Using TrackWise perform CAPAs, change controls, process investigations
  • Implement small capital projects
• Reliability Engineering(~3 months)
  • Become familiar with maintenance systems such as calibrations, PM programs, maintenance planning, maintenance supervision, contractor performed maintenance repairs, capital work completed with internal maintenance labor, and maintenance spare parts inventory.
• Validation Engineering (3-6 months)
  • Develop and perform EQ, FQ, IQ, and OQ protocols and reports
  • Oversee equipment validation and revalidation
• Project Engineering (6 - 9 months)
  • Responsible for overseeing small capital projects and/or Safety Card projects

Qualifications/Skills

Applied Math and Science : A strong understanding of the core chemical engineering fundamentals (thermodynamics, heat transfer, mass transfer, transport, kinetics, etc.).

Data Analysis, Visualization, Troubleshooting : The ability to analyze data from various sources, including sensors and experiments, to identify trends, troubleshoot issues, and improve efficiency.

Problem-Solving : With training and support from senior engineers, identify, analyze, and solve complex problems related to chemical processes and plant operations. Includes investigations.

Technical Writing & Communication : The ability to explain technical concepts clearly and accurately to technical and non-technical audiences.

Attention to Detail : Be meticulous and pay close attention to detail to ensure accuracy and quality.

Adaptability : The ability to adapt to changing priorities, new technologies, and unexpected challenges is important.

Time Management: Ability to handle key assignments, meeting deadlines with supervision.


Education, Experience & Licensing Requirements

B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering or equivalent degree.

• Ability to wear required PPE (steel-toe shoes, safety glasses, fire-retardant clothing).
• Physical ability to occasionally lift up to 25
• Regularly sit, stand, bend, reach, and move throughout the
• Comfortable working in a production/lab environment with potential exposure to: Dust, odors, noise, fumes, and varying temperatures.
