Funeral Director

Service Corporation International

As a licensed Funeral Director, you will ensure compliance with mortuary, health, and vital statistics regulations while delivering compassionate care to families during life's most difficult moments. Job Responsibilities Compassionately facilitate funeral arrangement discussions with deceased next of kin and preside over visitation, funeral, and graveside services according to family wishes, company standards, and applicable laws. Receive or initiate calls from next of kin; obtain deceased and family contact information; discuss needs (including language preferences); schedule arrangement appointments; email confirmations. Perform removals or transfers in accordance with company standards and processes. Care for the deceased in a respectful manner and update removal status in proprietary software. Greet next of kin and escort them to meeting spaces. Initiate and facilitate arrangement conferences, assess needs, and summarize desired outcomes. Discuss available life‑insurance and benefit options, such as Veteran benefits. Promote funeral, cemetery, and cremation services and related merchandise (e.g., catering, flowers, music, Ever Lasting Memory products). Transition arrangement conferences to the Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor to present cemetery property, merchandise options, pricing, and contract completion. Assume Funeral Services Counselor/Advisor responsibilities in their absence. Review and authorize merchandise and service contract revisions. Confirm authorization to proceed with service arrangements. Preside as Master of Ceremonies for visitation, funeral, or graveside services, maintaining a professional, organized, and caring demeanor. Be present for graveside services included in the purchase agreement and verify removal of personal belongings per arrangements. Visually inspect the deceased, adjust casket dressing, attire, or makeup, and communicate concerns to preparation staff. Inspect service arrangements against contractual agreements and next‑of‑kin expectations, initiating corrective action as needed. Interact with families to fulfill death‑care requests and obtain leads for pre‑need services. Plan events: source and order music, flowers, catering, and other arrangements to meet client requests. Create memorial products: scan photos, order memorabilia or stationery, produce electronic presentations, write obituaries, and create online memorials. Set up event rooms prior to services (chairs, tables, flowers, guest books, décor) and clean up afterward (chairs, tables, floors, storage of items). Perform attendant duties such as parking‑lot attendant, driver, usher, pallbearer, or courier. Represent and promote the location at community or charity events. Work under general guidance; collaborate with peers or managers for assistance and guidance. Exhibit accountability and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Seek guidance and coaching from managers, notify when workload is light, and volunteer for additional work. Adjust to new work structures, processes, requirements, or cultures. Additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. Minimum Requirements Education & Licenses Graduated from an accredited mortuary science school or college. Current Funeral Director license in the practicing state. Valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (required for company vehicles). Experience Preferred: prior industry experience. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Cognitive ability: reason, plan, identify problems, learn quickly, learn from experience, and apply learning to new situations. Process‑ and results‑oriented, motivated to remove obstacles and explore alternatives. Positive attitude with self‑motivation to advance industry and business understanding. Ability to build professional, trusting relationships. Professional written and verbal communication skills. Public speaking skills to influence and gain consensus. Proficient using databases in automated processes. Proficient MS Office skills. Work Conditions Environment: indoors and outdoors throughout all seasons and weather. Attire: professional business attire when in contact with families. Posture: sitting or standing 6 hours per day; frequent stair climbing. Physical Demands: manual dexterity required (paperwork, calculators, computers, phone); ability to push/pull up to 150 pounds. Hours: flexibility; services may occur outside normal business hours; working nights and weekends is frequently necessary.
