Official Title: Head Custodian Job Code: $26,334 - $29,682 Working Title: Salary Grade: 110 Length of Work Year: 239 Days Reports To: Principal and Custodial Director Summary Description of Classification: Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this class are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of custodial tasks that provide school personnel, students, and the public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities. Minimum Qualification Standards Ability to arrange, compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data and/or information; judging whether functional, structural or compositional characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards, procedures, or routines. Ability to exchange information for the purpose of obtaining information or clarifying details in well-established policies, procedures, and standards. Ability to operate, maneuver, and/or control the actions of electrically powered custodial equipment and hand-held supplies and cleaning tools. Ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information. Ability to perform addition and subtraction. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, involving semi-routine standardized work with some latitude for independent judgment concerning choices of action. Dependability, punctuality, and flexibility. Judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties which are often characterized by frequent change. Education, Training and Experience: High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by four years of supervisory skills/experience demonstrating ability to safely and effectively operate standard facility custodial equipment; ability to successfully complete the Custodial Maintenance Program and train staff members; and ability to fulfill the physical requirements. Certificate and License Requirements: None. Physical Demands: Tasks involve the ability to exert heavy physical effort in heavy work, with greater emphasis on climbing and balancing, and may also involve stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects (20–50 pounds). Occasionally heavier objects up to 100 pounds. Special Requirements: Paid Overtime: Yes. Duties and Responsibilities Uses electrical cleaning equipment in the cleaning of the assigned facility during assigned hours (vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high-speed buffers). Uses appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and established State Department of Education regulatory to ensure personal, student, public, and staff safety. Ensures assigned areas are properly opened daily and fully secured upon completion of daily tasks (locking doors and windows, turning off electrical units). Performs custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles; washing windows; dusting furniture; cleaning vents, fans, walls. Performs sanitizing tasks in various facility areas (restrooms, kitchen and food areas, cafeterias). Performs physically demanding tasks requiring use of heavy custodial equipment (mopping, stripping, waxing, floor buffing). Responds to emergency situations to confine, resolve or prevent injurious or otherwise hazardous conditions (spills, broken windows, broken locks). Moves furniture and other equipment in the performance of duties. Cleans equipment and tools after use and maintains cleanliness and order in storage areas. Reports equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to immediate supervisor. Performs routine maintenance on facility custodial equipment (changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, changing buffer machine pads). Performs non-cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance (changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, assisting in setting up for meetings/conférences). Functions independently or as part of a custodial crew depending on the nature of the task, such as seasonal facility preparations or other major custodial projects.
