MENTAL HEALTH PSYCHIATRIST

Mental Health Psychiatrist – Correctional Health Services Los Angeles County Department of Health Services seeks a dedicated Mental Health Psychiatrist to serve the unique healthcare needs of the jail population. The successful candidate will work onsite in a designated facility and may receive up to a 20% recruitment and retention bonus. Responsibilities Render professional medical services in the field of psychiatry. Perform psychiatric evaluations and screen for health‑related concerns as needed. Develop comprehensive psychiatric treatment plans. Evaluate individuals/clients to determine if probable cause is met to initiate detention under WIC 5150. Provide clinical consultation to other medical providers and staff, including interns and resident physicians, regarding treatment interventions, medical and diagnostic work performed, and participate in clinical case conferences. Assist in the planning, direction, and implementation of departmental initiatives and protocols to enhance and improve client care. Perform medication support services by evaluating the need for psychotropic medications. Prescribe medications, monitor their overall effect, and administer medication(s) when necessary. Order, obtain, review, and monitor pertinent laboratory tests. Participate in evaluation of the quality of care and provide input into formulating corrective action plans to mitigate future clinical risk. Conduct academic and/or research activities. Conduct trainings or assist in the training of interns and resident physicians. Testify in court as an expert witness. Discuss patient information with relevant third parties—including attorneys, judges, and family members—following appropriate release of information or court order. Licensing and Selection Requirements Licensing Requirements Completion of a residency approved by an American Specialty Board in psychiatry or equivalent training, as defined by official American Certifying Board recognition. Applicants who are currently completing residency may still apply; a contingent offer may be extended pending completion. Selection Requirements Active, unrestricted California State Physician and Surgeon's certificate, authorized by the Board of Medical Examiners of the State of California. Certificate must be submitted to HR within seven (7) calendar days of application receipt. Physical and Shift Requirements Light physical effort: occasional light lifting up to 10 pounds and some bending, stooping, or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved. Shifts may include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays as required. Compensation and Benefits Step 7 salary range due to Critical Shortage Recruitment. Up to a 20% recruitment and retention bonus available for on‑site full‑time positions.
