City Attorney – City of Aztec The City Attorney shall act as the legal counselor and advisor of the Commission and other city officials, and shall give written opinions when requested. The City Attorney shall draft or approve deeds, contracts, conveyances, ordinances, resolutions and other legal instruments, approve contracts and bonds before Commission approval, return ordinances and resolutions within ten (10) days of receipt, prosecute and defend the city in civil actions, oversee municipal court prosecutions and advise enforcement personnel. Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities High ethical standards and attention to detail Strategic thinker able to prioritize high‑impact matters using data‑driven insights Adaptable, capable of integrating innovation into traditional municipal legal frameworks Excellent oral and written communication, establishing effective relationships with service providers, consultants, employees, attorneys and the public Experience fostering relationships among city, county, state and federal government entities Strong leadership and organizational skills Knowledge of legal liability, data protection and intellectual property concerns Counsel city departments on compliance with local, state and federal laws Oversee litigation strategies including case assessment, settlement negotiation and coordination with outside counsel Commitment to morals, integrity and ethics while treating the City Commission, City employees and the public with dignity and respect Experience working with a City Commission to define a common vision and goals for the community Qualifications Bachelor's degree from an accredited law school and a Juris Doctor from an ABA‑accredited law school At least five years of experience in municipal, public or civil law Current law license in good standing, meeting New Mexico Bar admission eligibility via reciprocity or admission on motion Strong legal research, negotiation, communication and ethical decision‑making skills Personable and approachable professional, excellent verbal and written communication skills Compensation This position is a contract position. The starting salary range will be $100,000 per year, pending experience and qualifications.
