Job Overview The Office of the Director, Legal Unit (OD Legal) serves as the general counsel’s office for the Department of Industrial Relations. Attorneys represent the Director, department leadership, and division chiefs in a variety of labor and employment matters and provide legal advice and representation in public works, prevailing wages, Public Records Act, contracting, privacy, litigation, and other areas. Responsibilities Represent the Director of DIR in workers’ compensation cases involving trust funds administered by the Director (SIBTF, UEBTF, DWD). Represent the Department in internal DIR personnel and labor and employment matters. Provide legal advice and representation in public works, prevailing wages, Public Records Act, public contracting, privacy, litigation, and other matters concerning a wide variety of legal issues that may arise in the department. Perform progressively more difficult professional legal work as experience increases, learning new material and skills over time. Travel for short durations (one to two days) as required. Qualifications Active membership in the California State Bar. (Candidates who are in the final year of law school or eligible to take the California State Bar examination will be admitted to the examination but will not be considered until admitted to the State Bar.) Entry‑level attorney who can perform competent legal work, learn new material, and develop professional abilities over time. Ability to work independently and on collaborative teams. Working Conditions Location: 1515 Clay St, Suite 701, Oakland, CA 94612. Employees work in an office environment, with assigned desks, and use computers extensively for drafting, research, email communication, file review, and training. Typical business hours are Monday through Friday; additional hours may be required. Telework may be eligible with in‑person attendance as needed.
