While your expertise in structural design is a critical asset, your day-to-day work centers on the enduring health and performance of our existing plant infrastructure, some of which are under going significant redesigns. You'll be the go-to technical expert, applying your deep understanding of civil and structural engineering principles to safeguard our operations and support the continuous evolution of our site.
What You'll Do
Imagine a career where your structural engineering knowledge directly contributes to national security. As a Facility Structural Engineer, you will:
- Be the Technical Authority: As the CSE/TA for your assigned structural systems, you will provide comprehensive technical oversight and accountability for their operability, safety, and maintenance throughout their lifecycle. This includes assessing system health and performance, performing annual in-service inspections, and developing and implementing preventative measures to maintain structural integrity. You will hold overall technical responsibility for all aspects of structural operability and maintenanceactivities, ensuring strict compliance with relevant engineering practices, codes, and established safety authorization bases.
- Ensure Design Excellence and Maintain Integrity: Leverage your structural design experience to critically evaluate and interpret design changes and modifications, ensuring all new projects and upgrades seamlessly integrate with our existing infrastructure and uphold rigorous safety standards, guaranteeing that everystructural adjustment enhances, rather than compromises, our critical infrastructure. This involves understanding the nuances of how designs translate into real-world applications within a complex, operational environment.
- Develop Essential Technical Documentation and Specifications: You will be proficient with developingstructural drawings (plans, sections, and details) for various materials of construction (concrete, steel, masonry, cold-formed steel), structural calculations, equipment anchorage, report preparation, drafting (or oversight of drafting), and review of construction specifications (generally in the form of general notes on the drawings).
- Solve Complex Challenges: Tackle a diverse range of technical issues, from conducting detailed building evaluations and seismic analyses for existing structures to ensuring modifications to structures meet Department of Energy (DOE) and industry code requirements. You'll apply established engineering practices, codes, and standards to devise innovative and practical solutions that keep our facilities operating safely and efficiently.
- Hands-On Engagement: Your work will involve a dynamic blend of office-based analysis and vital field engagement. You'll conduct regular in-service inspections, thoroughly examining facilities to confirm their good condition and compliance with all requirements. This direct interaction with our physical infrastructure is essential to understanding its on going performance and identifying areas for improvement.
- Contribute to a Larger Purpose: Participate in multifaceted projects, including those focused on maintaining and enhancing our current buildings and supporting complete plant redesign initiatives.
