Job Title: Varsity Athletic Coach Location: District Job Group: Co-Curricular Reports To: Activities/Athletic Director Summary: Assists student athletes in acquiring core skills, strategies, and physical training to achieve individual and team goals. Directs student athletes in athletic training and competitions. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Administrative duties for the assigned activity: Communicate and model the Athletic Department’s philosophy, objectives, and techniques to assistant and JV coaches, students, volunteers, and the broader school community. Coordinate practices, clinics, and meetings to ensure program success. Assist in planning special sport events, arrange transportation, and coordinate scheduling with maintenance or other staff for facilities use. Train, inform, and encourage staff professional growth through clinic attendance, networking, and self-directed learning. Encourage completion of required documentation for state and system compliance, including health certifications, parental consent, and eligibility. Assist with budget preparation for the upcoming season. Recommend policy, method, or procedural changes when needed. Participate in the interview process and make hiring recommendations. Supervise and evaluate assistant and JV coaches; assess staff effectiveness and recommend actions to the Activities/Athletic Director. Equipment and property safeguarding: Implement safeguards for equipment maintenance and protection and monitor storage areas. Identify and authorize individuals who may access equipment or services. Collect costs for damaged, lost, or unreturned equipment. Issue, store, and recondition equipment as required. Properly mark and identify all equipment before use or storage. Maintain annual inventory and current records. Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of equipment. Recommend sanitation and equipment guidelines regarding type, style, color, or technical specifications. Instill respect for equipment and school property among all participants. Inspect locker rooms before and after practices and games to verify cleanliness. Secure all doors, windows, and locks before leaving the school premises. Activities of assigned athletes during play: Provide training on sport rules and regulations. Monitor student athletes’ grades and conduct. Direct student managers, assistants, and statisticians. Supervise athletes during transport, locker rooms, and events. Enforce discipline per school policy and team expectations, working to increase morale, cooperation, and resolve disputes. Contact parents or guardians if a student athlete becomes ineligible or drops from the team. Submit required paperwork for athletic injuries within 24 hours. Initiate programs and policies related to injuries, medical attention, and emergencies. Travel to and from, and attend all practices and games; provide assistance and safeguard participants. Authorize athlete access to designated areas at appropriate times. Stay current on sport techniques, trends, developments, and research. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities: Demonstrated leadership, mentoring, and good sportsmanship are required. May assist the Activities/Athletic Director and/or Principal in supervising high school and middle school coaches, assistant coaches, and volunteers. Education and/or Experience: Direct experience in organizing and leading a comprehensive sports program is expected. Advanced knowledge or demonstrated ongoing learning in health and fitness is preferred. Other Skills and Abilities: Effective organizational, communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills; proficiency with computers and fitness equipment; ability to maintain relationships with stakeholders; awareness of district, school board policies, system, state, and league regulations.
