Mid-Level AI Engineer

Location: Allentown, PA – Hybrid, 3–4 days onsite per week

Contract: 6-Month Contract-to-Hire with strong intent to convert to full-time

Pay Range: $45–$55/hour

Position Overview:

Our utility client is seeking a Mid-Level AI Engineer to join its engineering organization in Allentown, PA. This is a net-new position supporting the continued adoption and development of AI capabilities within the organization, including work alongside teams supporting SCADA and transmission engineering.

The ideal candidate is someone who is genuinely passionate about AI and enjoys experimenting with emerging technologies beyond their day-to-day responsibilities. This person should bring hands-on Python experience, a strong understanding of Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs), and the ability to think critically through open-ended technical problems.

This is a 6-month contract-to-hire opportunity with strong intent to convert to a full-time position . The team typically works onsite Tuesday through Thursday, with an overall expectation of 3–4 days per week at the client's Allentown headquarters.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop and support AI-driven solutions using Python and modern Generative AI technologies.
• Build scripts, tools, and user-facing solutions that leverage AI to improve engineering and business processes.
• Explore opportunities to integrate Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) into existing workflows.
• Leverage tools such as Microsoft Copilot to support AI-enabled development and automation.
• Work through complex, sometimes ambiguous problems and determine practical ways to apply AI technologies.
• Collaborate with engineering and technical stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into AI-driven solutions.
• Experiment with emerging AI tools, models, and approaches to identify potential use cases for the organization.
• Contribute to a growing AI capability as the team expands its use of AI across the business.

Required Qualifications

• 2–5 years of professional technical experience.
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
• Strong hands-on programming and scripting experience with Python .
• Experience working with Generative AI technologies.
• Exposure to or experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) .
• Experience using Microsoft Copilot or similar AI-assisted development tools.
• Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to independently piece together solutions to complex or loosely defined problems.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a hybrid team environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building AI-powered applications, interfaces, scripts, or automation tools.
• Personal projects, side projects, or other hands-on experimentation with LLMs, Generative AI, Copilot, Claude, or similar emerging AI technologies .
• Demonstrated curiosity around AI and a track record of independently learning and experimenting with new tools.
• Experience integrating AI capabilities into existing applications or technical workflows.

What They're Looking For

Beyond checking technical boxes, the team is looking for someone who is genuinely excited about AI. A candidate who experiments with LLMs, builds side projects, tests tools like Copilot or Claude, and enjoys figuring out how emerging technology can solve real problems will stand out.

Previous utilities experience is not required . The industry and business domain can be taught; the priority is finding someone with a strong technical foundation, curiosity, and hands-on AI experience.
