The ICU unit will care for patients in need of increased monitoring and treatment who are critically ill or injured or at risk of developing life-threatening organ dysfunction. These patients require monitoring and treatment beyond the capacity of medical/surgical and Step-Down units. Patient care includes but not limited to: Mechanical ventilator support; Vasoactive drug infusions; intracranial injury; trauma; neurologic conditions; septicemia, cardiac and cerebrovascular diseases; Post cardiac procedures, interventions and/or surgeries; post-operative arrhythmia management. POSITION OVERVIEW: The Nurse Manager of the Intensive Care assumes 24-hour responsibility, authority and accountability for patient care activities in ICU. Manages the day-to-day delivery of professional nursing services for assigned units. This position is responsible for the overall planning, budgeting, staffing, performance, and operation of the department in conjunction with the director as well as performance and annual review of direct reports. This position directly manages caregivers in the Intensive Care Unit. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES: Oversee the operations of assigned department to ensure smooth and efficient department operations and that resources are available in the assigned units 24/7. Collaborates with other staff members to facilitate provision of patient care. Ensures adequate departmental staffing to provide safe patient care through review of appropriate data, development and maintenance of master schedules. Acts as the department liaison to other hospital departments and outside entities. Responsible for resource management ensuring appropriate and sufficient equipment and supplies are available. Manages staffing and scheduling (control of master schedule; ETO & LOA approval; light duty scheduling) - delegates related clerical functions to admin assistant and/or other applicable staff. Serves as a real-time resource and assists with clinical expertise for staff with problem-solving on patient care, processes, and family issues. Serves as representative for all customers. Maintains ongoing communication with staff, department leadership, and others to ensure needs are being met for staff and patients. Engages medical staff to obtain input on the operation of the department and key decisions. Communicates (both written and orally) effectively and maintains professional relationships with caregivers, medical staff, patients, guests and other hospital departments. Role models two-way communication of the St. Charles Health System mission, vision, values, and strategic plan for the department (staff meetings, rounds, etc.). Coordinates quality initiatives and process improvements. Aligns and manages to St. Charles Health System metrics and quality initiatives. Oversees trending of quality and financial indicators including LOS with case manager support. Facilitates department meetings and shared governance/leadership efforts. Responsible for budget development, regular monitoring, accountability and meeting all operational targets for all areas within span of control. Manages operations within the budget. Provides productivity oversight and review. Works with leadership to achieve productivity standards. Develops and implements annual plan including goals for unit with director and supervisor. Controls and maintains position control including the addition and deletion of positions related to budget and human resource needs. Hires, directs, coaches and monitors the performance of all direct reports, to develop and maintain a high performance team that meets organizational and department goals. Responsible for performance and annual review of direct reports. Complies with Human Resource processes and controls. Monitors and ensure all direct reports are current with compliance and safety requirements. Implements and manages all organizational safety directives and goals. Provides and oversees team’s delivery of customer service in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate. Assists with quality, safety, customer service and regulatory compliance oversight: EMS – Receipt, assignment, tracking and trending, delegation. Creates a healing environment that supports all aspects of care, respects the wholeness of the individual, and demonstrates therapeutic presence through attitudes and behaviors that enhance the care experience for patients and caregivers. Oversees staff documentation for patient care to ensure proficiency in compliance with hospital policies and regulatory agencies. Directs, oversees and provides for leadership development of staff. Collaborates with teams to review processes and identify/implement opportunities for improvements, applying Value Improvement Practice concepts and tools. Supports Value Improvement Practice (VIP- Lean) principles of continuous improvement with energy and enthusiasm, functioning as a champion of change. Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests. Conducts all activities with the highest standards of professionalism and confidentiality. May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned. EDUCATION Required: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. BSN. Preferred: Master’s degree in Nursing LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION Required: Current licensure with the Oregon State Board of Nursing. Ability to travel to business functions/trainings/meetings and all St. Charles Health System worksites. AHA Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider certification. Preferred: N/A EXPERIENCE Required: 5 years related experience. 1 year nursing leadership experience. Preferred: Experience in a specialty area of nursing. PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Continually (75% or more): Use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level. Frequently (50%): Sitting, keyboard operation. Occasionally (25%): Standing, walking, bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing stairs, reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-10 pounds, grasping/squeezing, operation of a motor vehicle, ability to hear whispered speech level. Never (0%): Climbing ladder/step-stool, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 11-50 pounds. Exposure to Elemental Factors Occasionally (25%): Chemical solution for Laboratory Caregivers.
