Utilities Maintenance Technician

Job Description

Performs routine maintenance and repairs on city water, sewer mains, and services.

Summary of Duties

Organizational Relationships: Reports to: Utilities Supervisor/Sr. Gas Operator. Directs: This is a non-supervisory position. Has contact with other city employees and the general public. Essential Duties: Performs maintenance and routine repairs on waters, sewer mains, and services; repairs and replaces pumps, motors, bearings, reduction boxes, chlorine cylinders, fittings and regulators, meters, lines, valves, stops, tie-ins, taps, etc.; installs water and sewer tapes and repairs leaks; operates pickup trucks, backhoe, jet rig, ditch witch, welder, cutting torch, and safety or other equipment; maintains equipment in proper working condition, including checking oil, water, fuel, tires, and hydraulic system, and making appropriate adjustments; has the necessary skills to excavate around gas, sewer, electric, and telephone lines; sets up street barricades and detour routes as necessary. Other Important Duties: Maintains on-call status as necessary. May perform poly welding on gas lines while on call; and performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of methods, practices, and equipment natural gas; and the safe operation of light equipment and the provisions of the Texas Motor Vehicle Code relating to the operation of such motorized equipment. Skill/Ability to: service and repair equipment at city water, gas, and wastewater facilities. Understand and follow instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers; tolerate outside working conditions, including exposure to adverse weather conditions; and maintain appropriate necessary certifications, Texas driver's license applicable to job responsibilities, and good driving record.

Qualifications

Acceptable Experience and Training: High school diploma, or its equivalent, or any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Certificates and Licenses Required: Appropriate Texas driver's license; and Class C Water Commission. Certification in poly fusion certification is desirable. Water and Wastewater Certification from the Texas Water Commission.
