Job Title: Entry Level Ophthalmic Technician / Retina Technician

Location: Norwich, CT

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:45 AM - 4:00/5:00 PM (30-minute lunch break)

Job Type: Full-time

Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented, reliable, and compassionate Entry-Level Ophthalmic Technician to join our fast-paced clinical team in Norwich, CT. In this role, you will play a key part in optimizing clinic workflow, administering diagnostic testing, assisting with minor in-office procedures, and delivering exceptional patient care.

Key Responsibilities

• Patient Workups & History: Interview patients, document chief complaints, record comprehensive medical/ocular histories, check blood pressure, and dilate pupils for examination.

• Diagnostic & Clinical Testing: Perform visual acuity, extraocular movement, confrontational visual fields, applanation tonometry, OCT testing, and fluorescein angiography.

• Procedure Assistance: Prepare exam rooms and assist physicians with in-office minor procedures, including laser surgeries and ocular injections.

• Chart Documentation: Accurately update Electronic Medical Records (EMR) while adhering to strict medical, diagnostic coding, and procedural guidelines.

• Patient Education & Communication: Clearly convey physician orders, medication/drop instructions, and pre- or post-procedure care to patients.

• Room & Equipment Maintenance: Maintain clean, stocked exam rooms, track injectable medications, follow safety protocols, and perform preventive equipment maintenance.

• Compliance: Strictly follow all HIPAA, OSHA, and practice compliance standards to secure patient health information.

Qualifications & Skills

Required:

• High School Diploma or GED (Bachelor's degree welcomed - great fit for recent healthcare/science grads!)

• Strong knowledge of basic medical terminology and comfortable learning EMR software

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Ability to obtain CPSS certification within 6 months of hire

• Ability to complete annual online OSHA and HIPAA training

Preferred:

• Active COA, COT, or COS certification (or willingness to earn COA within 12 months of hire with team support)

• Knowledge of outpatient practice regulations and multi-physician clinic workflows

Schedule & Physical Requirements

• Hours: Standard shift starts at 7:45 AM (clinic opens at 8:00 AM) and ends around 4:00-5:00 PM. Flexibility for occasional early mornings or late evening wrap-ups is required.

• Physical Demands: Requires periods of sitting, standing, bending, and light lifting. Excellent hand-eye coordination, dexterity, visual acuity, and hearing are necessary to operate specialized testing equipment and surgical instruments.
