Counselor, EML, John F. Kennedy HS, 1.0 FTE

Under direction, provides a comprehensive developmental program of guidance and counseling to assist ESOL students in the area of acculturation, academic achievement, career/educational decision-making, and personal and social development. Acts as consultant in this regard to school staff, parents, and community members.

Physical demands: As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job.

Special requirements: Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as mandated by the MCEA agreement.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Thorough knowledge of the MCPS Policies and Procedures, the ESOL Instructional Program, and the Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program.
• Knowledge of growth and development stages of children.
• Knowledge of cross-cultural and multicultural counseling.
• Ability to read, take notes, and interpret written material.
• Ability to work effectively as part of a team or independently with staff, students, and parents.
• Ability to use a computer and other technological equipment.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to speak effectively and fluently in English and Spanish to large and small groups.
• Excellent human relations skills with the ability to establish good relationships with a multilingual, multicultural community.

Education, Training, Experience

Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in school guidance and counseling required. Experience as a teacher and/or counselor for ESOL students preferred. Bilingual English/Spanish required. Must meet Maryland state certification requirements for school guidance and counseling.
