Compensation : Competitive starting salary $81,600 - $102,800 commensurate with skills and experience, Full Pay Range $81,600 - $124,000
Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, and certifications in the pay equity assessment to determine equitable salary placement. Candidates should expect compensation offers within the starting compensation range. The full pay range is included to show the potential earnings for this position with sustained high performance.

Our Location
Energy Trust provides a range of work location options, including remote, hybrid and in-office work. This position will represent Energy Trust in public settings and potentially at community events. We are open to candidates who live throughout Oregon and Washington. The Senior Accountant would be expected to report to the office on a quarterly basis, at minimum.
What We’re Looking For:
The Senior Accountant is responsible for a wide range of general accounting activities, including month-end and year-end close processes, grant and contract accounting, financial reporting, projects and compliance activities. Primary duties include producing financial transactions and analyses, leading and participating in improvement projects, preparing, analyzing, and interpreting reports and records, and serving as a hands-on senior individual contributor responsible for a broad range of routine and complex accounting activities, exercising independent judgment, resolving issues, and determining when matters require escalation. This individual reports to the Accounting Manager.
This position is expected to report to the Portland office quarterly at a minimum for all staff and other in-person meetings.
What You’ll Do :
- Perform complex accounting activities and support month-end and year-end close activities, including developing and preparing journal entries analyzing and reconciling balance sheet accounts, preparing supporting schedules, and ensuring accurate financial reporting and ledger maintenance.
- Prepare, review, and submit grant and contract invoices while ensuring compliance with contractual requirements, supporting documentation, and funding source restrictions.
- Prepare and review documentation and audit schedules for external auditors.
- Prepare and review documentation and schedules for 990 tax form preparation.
- Ensure that appropriate non-profit and grant accounting principles and compliance requirements are adhered to and incorporated into the accounting functions This includes preparing grant revenue and receivable entries, developing grant and contract invoices, and partnering with program staff to resolve invoice and payment issues.
- Research finance policies and accounting treatment papers.
- Proactively make recommendations for improvements in the financial and accounting processes, reporting, procedures and policies of Energy Trust.
- Continuously monitor the effectiveness of internal controls while fulfilling job duties.
- Identify recurring errors, reconciliation issues, control concerns, and process improvement opportunities, and take appropriate action to resolve or escalate them.
- Document workflows and maintain up to date desk-level procedures as part of the internal control system.
- Provide ad hoc reporting to support internal and Program Management Contractor staff when needed.
- Lead or participate in various department projects and testing requirements.
- Work closely with General Accountants providing vacation backup and assisting during peak volume periods.
- Collaborate with peers in the Finance department to achieve team objectives.
- Must be able to interact with a diverse workforce and be comfortable working in culturally diverse settings and groups.
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Perform all functions of the job in a safe manner.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements
What You’ll Need:
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent educational experience required. CPA licensure or advanced business degree preferred.
- 5 years of accounting experience in a professional environment, preferably within a nonprofit organization, including experience with grant accounting, grant invoicing, compliance requirements, and financial reporting.
- Demonstrated experience managing or performing complex month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, variance analysis, and audit support.
- Strong knowledge of the following software applications or their equivalents: SharePoint, Microsoft Teams, Zoom, Webex, and MS Office applications including Word, Outlook and PowerPoint.
- Must have a strong working knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- Experience with Great Plains preferred.
- Experience writing and documenting business processes.
- Strong financial analytical skills.
- Must be well versed (as a systems user) in database concepts.
- Proven ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
- Experience with project management is preferred.
- Must be a proficient, innovative, and multi-tasking accounting professional who is able to perform in a fast-paced environment.
- Must provide strong customer service experience oriented towards providing support to a diverse workforce or customer base.
- Must be able to perform all normal office job functions in a safe and effective manner.
- Should have strong problem-solving skills.
- Must be able to work independently as well as closely with others within the Finance team – and cross-collaboratively within the organization.
