Job Summary

We are seeking a detail-oriented Paralegal/Legal Assistant in Beaufort, SC for a contract/temporary opportunity supporting attorneys in a government and public sector legal environment. This role is ideal for a legal professional with 3-5 years of experience who is comfortable working with Family Court matters, legal case management systems, court filings, and courtroom support.

The Paralegal/Legal Assistant will provide critical support to attorneys handling matters related to child protection, foster care, adoption, child day care, and adult protection. This position offers meaningful work in a mission-driven legal setting, with the opportunity to contribute to cases that directly support families and the community.

This is a strong opportunity for candidates who enjoy organized legal work, collaborative case preparation, and a professional office environment with supportive legal leadership. The assignment is expected to start around July 1 and may provide the opportunity to apply for full-time employment consideration due to an upcoming opening.

Key Responsibilities

- Prepare pleadings, motions, proposed orders, notices, and other legal documents for attorney review using the Legal Case Management System.
- Maintain accurate case data, including party information, addresses, hearing outcomes, documents, and case activity.
- Prepare Family Court cases by organizing files, verifying service, distributing treatment plans, preparing dockets, processing continuance requests, and re-docketing hearings.
- File legal documents with the Clerk of Court, circulate and serve orders, and coordinate documents with appropriate parties.
- Attend hearings and trials, assist with courtroom case flow, and maintain accurate notes on attendance, testimony, evidence, and court rulings.
- Collect, assemble, and verify witness statements, reports, documents, exhibits, and other case materials for attorney preparation.

Compensation and Benefits

- Pay: $25.26 per hour.
- Schedule: 34 hours per week.
- Office hours: Work schedule will be determined by the attorney and will fall between 8:30 AM and 5:00 PM.
- Assignment type: Contract/temporary, with the opportunity to apply for full-time employment consideration.
- Anticipated start date: July 1.
- Occasional local driving to the courthouse may be required to pick up documents.
- Mileage reimbursement is provided for required courthouse travel.
