This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Mainframe Automation Systems Programmers - long-term assignment based in Australia.
This is a long-term opportunity for an experienced Mainframe Systems and Automation professional to contribute to a major migration program. You will play a key role in designing, developing, delivering, and maintaining a new automation solution that replicates the functionality of an existing environment. The position combines deep mainframe expertise with automation, systems programming, and migration experience. You will work closely with technical teams and stakeholders to ensure solutions align with business and migration objectives. Strong technical judgment, documentation, communication, and stakeholder management will be essential. The role offers the opportunity to apply extensive mainframe experience to a complex and strategically important transformation program.
Accountabilities
- Design, develop, implement, and maintain mainframe automation solutions aligned with business requirements and migration objectives.
- Support the replication of existing automation functionality within a new mainframe environment, maintaining a like-for-like approach where required.
- Provide technical expertise across systems programming, automation, solution design, development, delivery, and ongoing maintenance.
- Work with technologies such as Broadcom OPS/MVS and/or IBM Systems Automation to support reliable and effective automation capabilities.
- Develop and maintain automation components using REXX, JCL, NetView, AOF rules, and related mainframe technologies.
- Support the installation, configuration, maintenance, and optimization of mainframe automation products.
- Contribute to migration activities between mainframe automation platforms, identifying dependencies, risks, and technical considerations.
- Apply knowledge of ISPF, ISPF Dialogue Management Services, and SDSF to support system administration and automation requirements.
- Provide guidance and assurance throughout solution design and implementation, ensuring alignment with agreed migration outcomes.
- Assess technical requirements and use sound judgment to define practical automation solutions that support business needs.
- Support change processes and operational procedures required to maintain mainframe automation functions.
- Collaborate with technical teams, business stakeholders, and other project participants throughout the migration program.
- Produce clear technical documentation and contribute to presentations, status updates, and stakeholder communications.
- Identify potential risks associated with automation and migration activities and contribute to appropriate mitigation strategies.
Requirements
- 15+ years of relevant experience working with Mainframe technologies, with substantial experience in systems programming and automation.
- Proven experience with Broadcom OPS/MVS and/or IBM Systems Automation.
- Hands-on experience with REXX, JCL, NetView, and/or AOF rules.
- Strong knowledge of ISPF and ISPF Dialogue Management Services.
- Experience using SDSF (Spool Display Search Facility).
- Demonstrated experience installing and maintaining mainframe automation solutions.
- Experience migrating between mainframe automation products is highly desirable.
- Strong understanding of standard mainframe controls, operating procedures, and automation practices.
- Ability to translate business requirements into effective technical automation solutions.
- Experience supporting solution design, technical assurance, and migration programs in complex enterprise environments.
- Understanding of mainframe change management, processes, and requirements necessary to maintain automation functions.
- Tertiary qualification in Technology or a related discipline is highly desirable.
- Excellent verbal, written, documentation, and presentation skills.
- Strong stakeholder management and collaboration capabilities, with the ability to communicate effectively with both technical and business audiences.
- At least 5 years of Australian local experience is preferred.
- Must be an Australian Citizen and hold an active Baseline security clearance or, preferably, NV1 clearance.
- Applicants must be based in Australia; overseas applicants and Mainframe Developers without the required systems programming and automation background are not eligible.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to the end-customer site as required.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote/hybrid engagement model.
