Fergus High School Assistant Volleyball Coach Starting Date: Jul 1, 2026 Job Description Lewistown Public Schools Job Title: ATHLETIC COACH Reports To: Activity Director/Athletic Director/Principal/Superintendent FLSA Status: Nonexempt/Classified Revised Date: April 22, 2026 Approved By: Brad Moore Approved Date: April 22, 2026 Qualifications: Valid MHSA Coaching Certificate or willingness to obtain a certificate is required. All coaches must have a current First Aid certificate. A teacher or substitute teacher employed by the Lewistown Public Schools is preferred. Previous coaching experience in assigned sport is desirable. Requires knowledge and background in the assigned sport. Must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Supervises: Athletes and team assigned to him/her and assumes supervising control over all athletes in the program when such control is needed. Job Goal: To carry out the aims and objectives of the sport, instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategy and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. Duties and Responsibilities: Has a thorough knowledge of the athletic policy approved by Lewistown Public Schools and the Board of Trustees and is responsible for its implementation. Understands the proper administrative line of command and refers all student and parent requests or grievances through proper channels. Is aware of all public/staff/departmental meetings that require attendance. Maintains discipline and works to increase morale and cooperation within the school sports program. Administrative Duties: Assists the Athletic Director with scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sport events. Assists in necessary preparation to hold scheduled sport events or practices and adheres to scheduled facility times. Coordinates program with maintenance and school employees. Provides documentation to the Athletic Director to fulfill state and system requirements concerning physical examinations, parental consent and eligibility. Provides safeguards for maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites. Student Responsibilities: Provides the District's training rules and any other unique regulations of the sport to each athlete who is considered a participant. Provides assistance and guidance to each participant by presence at all practices, games and while traveling. Directs student managers and statisticians on respective teams. Determines discipline and delineates procedures concerning due process when enforcement of discipline is necessary. Contacts parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible. Equipment and Facilities: Is accountable for all equipment, collects the cost of any equipment lost or not returned, arranges for issuing and storing of equipment and submits an annual inventory. Recommends budgetary items for the next year in his/her area of the program. Monitors equipment rooms and coaches' offices and authorizes who may enter. Permits athletes to be in authorized areas of the building at appropriate times. Examines locker rooms for cleanliness and maintains specific sport equipment. Secures all doors, lights, windows and locks before leaving building. Program Responsibilities: Makes press releases and school announcements. Instructs team members on changes in the rules and teaches fundamentals of the sport. Maintains a record of team statistics and requirements for lettering. Works within the basic framework and philosophy of the sport. Attends all staff meetings, carries out scouting assignments and plans in‑season and out‑of‑season conditioning and weight programs. Strives to improve skills by attending clinics and using resources. Performs other duties consistent with the nature of the position. Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and experience working with school‑age students is required. Must have current tuberculin test and First Aid certificate. Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of people. Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. Physical Demands: Heavy lifting and performance of personal care duties may be required. Regularly required to talk or hear, stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, feel and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required include close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Work Environment: Noise level is usually moderate to loud. Personal Characteristics: Employees must exhibit acceptable work habits and perform tasks professionally: maintain proper grooming and dress, be punctual, initiate tasks independently, manage time efficiently, perform tasks neatly and accurately, provide positive feedback to supervisors, maintain self‑control and a friendly disposition, and maintain confidentiality of related work matters. Drug Free Workplace: Screening tests for alcohol and illegal drug use may be required before hiring and during employment. Employees must submit to a fingerprint criminal background check. Appointment contingent upon acceptable criminal background report. Evaluation: Performance will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Classified Personnel.
