Structural Fitter
Responsible for laying out, fitting, and assembling structural steel components from shop drawings so assemblies are dimensionally correct and ready for welding. The Structural Fitter is expected to understand how individual parts relate to the finished assembly and to catch drawing, material, orientation, and fit-up problems before they become costly rework. Relocation assistance available if moving from out of the area up to $4500
Primary Responsibilities
- Read and interpret structural shop drawings, assembly drawings, detail drawings, dimensions, elevations, and weld symbols.
- Identify and verify beams, columns, plates, angles, clips, stiffeners, connection material, and other components required for an assembly.
- Establish reference points and accurately lay out component locations, hole relationships, cut locations, elevations, and orientations.
- Fit beams, columns, frames, plates, stiffeners, clips, connections, and other structural components to required dimensions and tolerances.
- Check assemblies for overall length, width, square, plumb, orientation, camber or elevation requirements, and other critical dimensions before release to welding.
- Use tape measures, squares, levels, straightedges, clamps, come-alongs, jacks, and other fitting tools to position and secure material.
- Prepare mating surfaces and joints as required and tack components securely while maintaining alignment.
- Verify part marks, drawing revisions, and material before incorporating components into an assembly.
- Identify drawing conflicts, missing dimensions, incorrect material, damaged components, or fit-up conditions that require clarification.
- Coordinate with welders so assemblies are accessible, properly prepared, and ready for efficient welding.
- Make authorized adjustments or corrections while avoiding unnecessary rework or undocumented changes.
- Maintain productive fitting and assembly flow while protecting dimensional accuracy.
Experience & Qualifications
- Previous structural steel fitting or fabrication experience preferred.
- Strong ability to read structural shop and fabrication drawings.
- Working knowledge of structural steel shapes, plates, connection components, weld symbols, and common fabrication terminology.
- Demonstrated ability to perform accurate layout, measurement, squaring, and assembly work.
- Basic tack-welding ability is preferred where required for fitting operations.
- Ability to use common fabrication and measuring tools safely and accurately.
Skills & Abilities
- Strong tape-measure, layout, math, and dimensional reasoning skills.
- Ability to visualize a finished assembly from two-dimensional fabrication drawings.
- Ability to understand orientation, elevations, reference lines, centerlines, and component relationships.
- High attention to detail and ability to recognize when dimensions or components do not make sense.
- Ability to organize parts and work efficiently without sacrificing accuracy.
- Clear communication with welders, supervision, material handling, and Quality personnel.
Safety & Quality Expectations
- Regularly stand, bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, and move around large steel assemblies.
- Handle fitting tools, clamps, jacks, and fabrication components within safe working limits.
- Work around cranes, forklifts, welding, grinding, torch cutting, noise, heat, and other fabrication-shop conditions.
- Must be able to wear required PPE and safely work around heavy structural steel.
Physical & Work Environment
- Verify drawings, revision level, material, and component orientation before fitting.
- Do not force incorrect material or components to fit; stop and obtain clarification when conditions do not match the drawing.
- Maintain dimensional accuracy so downstream welding and assembly do not create avoidable rework.
- Follow safe practices for rigging, lifting, clamping, grinding, torch work, and tack welding.
- Keep work areas organized and maintain clear access around large structural assemblies.
Compensation & Benefits
- Pay is dependent on experience, skills, and qualifications. Insurance benefits are available after successful completion of the probationary period.
