Key Responsibilities

• Pick and prepare instrument sets and equipment based on the proposed surgery, potential complications, and surgeon preferences
• Scrub, gown, and glove self and other team members; drape patients according to approved methods
• Maintain sterile technique throughout all operative procedures and call attention to any breaks in sterile field
• Perform sponge and sharp counts with the Circulating Nurse at required intervals during surgery
• Properly identify, handle, and preserve surgical specimens; assist the surgeon as first assistant when needed, including retracting tissue, cutting sutures, and irrigating wounds
• Perform sterile processing duties including decontamination, sterilization, organization of instrument trays, stocking of crash carts, and operation of autoclaves and sonic washers

Required Qualifications

• Graduation from an accredited Surgical Technologist training program or a minimum of one year of OR scrub nursing experience (may be waived at the discretion of the OR Supervisor)
• Current BLS certification required
• Thorough knowledge of medical asepsis as it applies to the operating room
• Ability to tolerate exposure to blood and/or body tissue
• Willingness to work rotating shifts, take call, and work weekends as scheduling demands

Preferred Experience / Skills

• Certification as a Central Supply Technician
• Familiarity with individual surgeon techniques and preferences across a variety of procedure types
• Experience operating and monitoring sterilization equipment including autoclaves and sonic washers
