Schoharie Facilities Supervisor

The NYC Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) enriches the environment and protects public health for all New Yorkers by providing 1.1 billion gallons of high‑quality drinking water, managing wastewater and stormwater, and reducing air, noise, and hazardous materials pollution. DEP is the largest combined municipal water and wastewater utility in the country, with nearly 6,000 employees. DEP’s water supply system is comprised of 19 reservoirs and 3 controlled lakes throughout the system’s 2,000 square‑mile watershed that extends 125 miles north and west of the City. Supervisor (Watershed Maintenance I) Duties Oversee the operation, maintenance, repair, and inspection of infrastructure within the City of New York’s watershed areas, including reservoirs, aqueducts, groundwater systems, water and wastewater treatment facilities, roads, bridges, equipment, and associated lands. Ensure adherence to all applicable environmental health and safety laws, regulations, policies, and procedures at the federal, state, local, and agency levels. Operate computerized, electronic, and mechanical equipment as needed, and drive a motor vehicle to travel between work locations. Estimate labor and material needs for regional projects. Direct the operation and maintenance of equipment and approve use of materials. Organize personnel and teams to accomplish routine tasks, special projects, and emergencies. Coordinate support from other DEP organizational units and outside DEP through municipal agreements and by contract/purchase order for work beyond the capability of the region. Complete employee evaluations of subordinates. May serve as the Chief Operator of the Schoharie Campus water treatment system. Some of the physical activities performed by a Supervisor Watershed Maintenance I and environmental conditions experienced include standing or walking for long periods, lifting heavy objects, climbing ladders and steep grades, entering small or confined spaces, lifting objects up to waist height, fingering, grasping, squeezing, and/or turning objects such as tools and equipment, pushing and pulling objects such as tools and levers using one or two hands, reaching at a distance up to arm’s length, coordinating the movements of hands and feet, and balancing body on foot stools or ladders from 3 to 30 feet in height while standing and working with hands overhead, and entering permit or non‑permit confined spaces in order to perform the essential tasks of the position. Supervisor Watershed Maintenance I may be required to: wear protective equipment such as gloves, boots, goggles, earplugs, noise attenuators, face shields, and/or respirators; work in temperatures ranging from 0°F to 105°F in wetness and varying atmospheric conditions such as high and low humidity; work in the presence of toxic and/or corrosive chemicals and moving parts of machinery and equipment; and work in restricted spaces for up to 1 hour at a time on surfaces made of metal gratings, macadam, and/or cement. Special working conditions include shifts that may include nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Preferred Skills Janitorial experience, as this position will supervise the Facilities Crew responsible for the cleaning and maintenance of staffed and unstaffed facilities throughout the Catskill Region. Experience in operation of a small surface water treatment facility. General familiarity with MS Office, including Outlook. Ability to navigate CityTime, time‑keeping program. Ability to learn how to use a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) and a computer tablet to receive and create work orders, input data, and close out completed work. Might be required to use a respirator and maintain enrollment in the Bureau’s Respiratory Protection Program. Licenses Required A Motor Vehicle Driver’s License valid in the State of New York. This license must be maintained for the duration of employment. May be required to have or obtain a Grade C NYSDOH Water Plant Operator License and maintain it. Hours / Shift 40 hours per week, shift work including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Work Location 1216 Intake Rd, Prattsville, NY 12468 Minimum Qualifications A four‑year high school diploma or its equivalent, plus three years of recent satisfactory experience in the operation, maintenance, repair, construction or inspection of facilities, equipment and lands in a watershed area, including aqueducts, reservoirs, water and/or wastewater treatment plants; at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory capacity. Assignment Level II In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, to be assigned to Assignment Level II, candidates must have one additional year of full‑time satisfactory experience in a supervisory capacity, for a total of four years of experience. Assignment Level III In addition to meeting the Qualification Requirements above, to be assigned to Assignment Level III, candidates must have four additional years of full‑time satisfactory experience, at least two of which must have been in a supervisory capacity, for a total of seven years of experience. License Requirement A Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York.
