Pay Range: $30.23/Hr. to $38.00/Hr.

JOB STATEMENT: Maintenance Mechanic 1 is an entry-level maintenance position responsible for supporting the safe and reliable operation of facility and process equipment. This position performs routine lubrication, preventative maintenance, inspections, basic repairs, adjustments, and equipment installations under the direction of Maintenance Mechanics, Technicians, and Maintenance Supervision.

Maintenance Mechanic 1 will develop foundational skills in mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigeration, and facility utility systems. This position will assist with the operation, inspection, maintenance, and troubleshooting of equipment while gaining the knowledge and experience necessary to progress to higher-level maintenance classifications.

Essential Duties:

• Maintain facility and process equipment using proper maintenance techniques and established PM intervals.
• Perform assigned preventative maintenance, inspections, lubrication, adjustments, and repairs through PMs and work orders.
• Complete assigned work, PMs, and work orders in a timely and accurate manner.
• Make basic mechanical repairs and adjustments under the guidance of Mechanics, Technicians, and Maintenance Supervision.
• Work with Mechanics II and senior maintenance personnel in repairing, rebuilding, installing, and maintaining facility and process equipment in the shop and plant environment.
• Develop basic working knowledge of pumps, including centrifugal, positive displacement, and pneumatic pumps.
• Develop basic working knowledge of gearboxes, motors, bearings, mechanical drives, pneumatic systems, valves, and other process equipment.
• Work with and assist in the maintenance of valves, including butterfly, diaphragm, knife gate, manual, and power-actuated valves.
• Perform basic inspections and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, controls, sensors, and related components under the direction of qualified maintenance personnel.
• Assist with basic troubleshooting and maintenance of facility utility systems, including water, compressed air, HVAC, refrigeration, boilers, and related utility equipment.
• Assist qualified maintenance personnel with routine inspections, PMs, cleaning, lubrication, and basic maintenance activities on refrigeration and utility equipment.
• Develop an understanding of refrigeration system components, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, valves, and associated controls.
• Assist with monitoring refrigeration and utility equipment for abnormal conditions such as temperature changes, pressure indications, leaks, unusual noise, vibration, or other operating concerns and report findings to Maintenance Supervision.
• Assist with routine maintenance and inspections of utility systems while following established procedures and safety requirements.
• No independent work on ammonia refrigeration systems is required at the Mechanic 1 level unless specifically trained, authorized, and directed by Maintenance Supervision.
• Follow established procedures for Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), confined space entry, hot work, and other applicable safety programs.
• Operate a forklift as needed to move parts, materials, equipment, and trash.
• Maintain general cleanliness and organization of the maintenance shop and work areas.
• Assist with inventory and stocking of maintenance parts and materials.
• Document equipment and facility issues and communicate abnormal conditions to Maintenance Supervision.
• Maintain accurate and complete documentation associated with assigned PMs, work orders, inspections, and repairs.
• Perform other maintenance duties as assigned by Maintenance Supervision.

Education/Experience:

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Previous mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, winery, or production experience preferred.
• Previous forklift experience preferred.
• Maintenance trade school, vocational training, or related technical education is a plus.
• Willingness and ability to learn refrigeration, utilities, mechanical, electrical, and controls systems.

Knowledge of:

• Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical equipment.
• Basic understanding of pumps, motors, gearboxes, valves, bearings, and pneumatic systems. Basic electrical and controls concepts.
• Basic understanding of refrigeration and facility utility systems.
• Basic understanding of refrigeration components and their function.
• Basic knowledge of ammonia (NH3) refrigeration systems, including awareness of ammonia hazards, PPE requirements, and emergency response procedures.
• Basic understanding of Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures and safe work practices.
• Must understand and comply with all applicable ISO 9001, HACCP, GMP, safety, and company requirements and processes.
• Ability to recognize abnormal equipment conditions and communicate issues to Maintenance Supervision.

Ability to:

• Work independently on assigned tasks with appropriate direction and supervision.
• Work effectively as part of a maintenance team.
• Follow verbal and written instructions.
• Learn and apply maintenance procedures and safe work practices.
• Use basic hand tools and approved maintenance equipment.
• Read and understand basic work orders, PM instructions, equipment manuals, and documentation.
• Communicate effectively with co-workers, production personnel, Mechanics, Technicians, and Supervision.
• Work at various heights and in awkward positions.
• Learn progressively more advanced mechanical, electrical, controls, refrigeration, and utility maintenance skills.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Provide and maintain proper hand tools from the approved tool list according to job classification.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: 

• Exposure to moving machinery and mechanical equipment.
• Occasionally high noise levels.
• Exposure to solvents, chemicals, cleaning agents, and other industrial materials.
• Frequent work outdoors and changing environmental conditions.
• Exposure to production, refrigeration, HVAC, boiler, compressed air, water, and other facility utility systems.
• Work may require entering confined spaces and working at elevated locations in accordance with company safety procedures.

 

  PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT REQUIRED:  

• Side-shield safety glasses.
• Safety vests or other require high-visibility apparel.
• Head protection where required.

• Additional PPE as required for the specific task or work environment.
