School Nurse

Job Type: Full-time, Nine (9) months (187 days) per year according to PPSB

School Year: 2026-2027

Salary Range: $63,361-$92,701

Ad Valorem - 2.40 parish property (ad valorem) tax mills are dedicated to employee salaries. The annual receipts from this tax are distributed to employees twice a year, one-half in January and one-half in June. The amount of each employee's supplement is the employee's salary multiplied by the annual percentage (computed each year based on actual tax revenues)

Job Goal

To promote and support student health, safety and well-being by delivering comprehensive school health services, collaborating with educators, families and community resources and ensuring compliance with health regulations to enhance students' academic success. This role serves as an advocate for students' health needs within the education setting.

Qualifications (minimum education, licensure, skills and/or experience)

Required

  • Graduation from an accredited school of Nursing.
  • Registered Nurse (RN) with a license to practice in the state of Louisiana.
  • Current cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and First Aid Certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in pediatric, school, outpatient or community / public healthcare.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism in handling sensitive student records.

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited institution.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in an educational or healthcare setting.
  • Skilled working with student information systems (SISs).
  • Working knowledge of Google Workspace.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Program Development and Support

  • Plans and implements a comprehensive school health program in collaboration with the Nursing Coordinator and school administrators.
  • Contributes to the design, execution and evaluation of health-related school programs, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and positive student outcomes.
  • Demonstrates effective emergency-response competencies by administering first aid and urgent care in alignment with established district policies and procedures.
  • Ensures safe and accurate administration of medications by adhering to physician prescriptions and established school guidelines and policies.
  • Conducts and documents screenings and health assessments for vision, hearing, scoliosis and any other screenings mandated by state law. Identifies potential issues and refers students in accordance with departmental regulations.
  • Completes health appraisals for designated students, performs physical examinations and makes appropriate referrals as necessary.
  • Monitors and enforces compliance with immunization and communicable disease control requirements.
  • Develops and keeps comprehensive records of immunizations, health screenings and individual student health histories. Ensures confidentiality and compliance with state and federal regulations regarding student health information.
  • Assumes authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
  • Promotes wellness by providing health and safety education to students, staff, families and other stakeholders on health-related topics, including nutrition, hygiene, disease prevention and first aid.
  • Conducts in-service training and serve as a resource for school health issues.
  • Collaborates with Teachers to integrate health topics into the curriculum in alignment with current guidelines. Collaborates with community resources to enhance health education programs.
  • Investigates referrals for individual health concerns, coordinates with appropriate agencies for treatment, and follows up with required documentation and reporting.
  • Participates as a key member of 504 and Individualized Education Program (IEP) teams, providing health-related insights.
  • Assists in the assessment of medical eligibility for services and recommends appropriate accommodations.
  • Collaborates with parents, healthcare providers and educational staff to create Individualized Healthcare Plans (IHPs) for students with chronic health conditions. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of IHPs, making adjustments as necessary.
  • Develops and implements health-related accommodations to facilitate student access to education.
  • Participates as a key member of school and/or district safety teams.
  • Conducts regular assessments of the school environment to identify potential health and safety hazards.
  • Implements infection control measures and monitors communicable diseases.
  • Provides guidance on health policies and emergency response procedures
  • Supports school personnel in upholding sanitary standards to promote a healthy and safe school environment.
  • Collaborates with the Nursing Coordinator, school administrators and staff to develop and implement programs that promote healthy, informed decision-making and the prevention of substance abuse and other youth risk behaviors.

Security and Compliance

  • Implements emergency medical procedures, including first aid, medication administration and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) program management.
  • Prepares and submits required health reports to appropriate authorities.
  • Adheres to district policies and procedures and follows school, district, state and federal regulations concerning the school health program.

Collaboration and Professional Development

  • Serves as a liaison between school, family and healthcare providers.
    • Schedules and conducts home visits when appropriate to assess student health needs and provide support.
    • Communicates with parents and healthcare professionals regarding student health needs, including physical, emotional or social health concerns assisting parents in interpreting medical and nursing findings.
    • Coordinates referrals to community healthcare services as necessary.
  • Maintains communication with immediate supervisor, keeping them informed of problems, concerns and significant developments.
  • Communicates with parents on a regular basis regarding health services.
  • Collaborates with appropriate staff and stakeholders to evaluate individual student medical needs.
  • Engages in ongoing professional learning to stay current with best practices in school nursing and pediatric care.

Physical Demands

This role primarily operates in an indoor, climate-controlled environment, with exposure to minimal temperature variations. The usual methods of performing job functions require moderate lifting (twenty to fifty [20-50] pounds), assisting / carrying of students with mobility challenges, pushing and pulling with frequent engagement in activities such as standing, walking and sitting. Additional physical requirements include ability to sit for prolonged periods; frequent use of hands and fingers for typing, data entry and computer-based tasks or other responsibilities; extended use of a computer for data analysis, report generation, communication and administrative duties; manual dexterity for various responsibilities; and adaptability to switch between multiple tasks and manage interruptions.
