Transportation Router / Dispatcher

The Transportation Router / Dispatcher is responsible for designing, coordinating, and supervising safe and efficient student transportation routes for the district. This role combines routing logistics with daily operational oversight, ensuring compliance with safety regulations, timely service, and effective communication among drivers, schools, and families.

Qualifications: Must have a High School diploma. Must possess/maintain a valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card (upon employment). Background clearance (upon employment). Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience in school transportation, logistics, or fleet operations.

Skills & Abilities: Strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with routing software and basic computer applications. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of transportation safety regulations and best practices.

Duties and Responsibilities: Assist in the development and implementation districtwide transportation protocols for route operations, safety procedures, incident response, and data-based decision-making to ensure efficient and compliant transportation services. Coordinate daily transportation operations, including dispatch, scheduling drivers and staff who serve as backup drivers for route coverage and substitutions. Respond to and resolve operational issues such as delays, breakdowns, or staffing shortages. Maintain excellent working knowledge and application of bus routes, field trip requirements, schedules and vehicle reservation requirements. Routing & Planning: Develop and maintain daily bus routes and schedules for elementary students using routing software and district SIS (student information system). Optimize routes for efficiency, safety, and cost-effectiveness. Analyze routes for efficiency and pinch points and troubleshoot ways to improve. Work with McKinney Vento liaison to transport students. Adjust routes in response to enrollment changes, road conditions, construction, and special programs. Ensure compliance with state and local transportation regulations. Data & Reporting: Maintain accurate routing data, student ridership records and driver logs. Support Transportation Supervisor in gathering route and ridership data, efficiency and operational performance. Monitor monthly MIPS reports and periodically adjust routing for special needs buses. Other duties as assigned.

Environmental Conditions: The noise level in the work environment is usually loud. The employee may frequently work in outside weather conditions. Office and field environment with frequent interaction at bus yards. May require early mornings, afternoons, and occasional evening or weekend work. Ability to respond to emergencies and changing conditions as needed.
