Fisheries and Restoration Design Engineer

About Us Northwest Hydraulic Consultants (NHC) is an international firm of civil engineers and geoscientists providing professional services for the development, management, and protection of water resources. This opportunity adds a fisheries and restoration design engineer to our California Branch. You will work within a specialized team of geoscientists, water resources engineers, hydrologists, surveyors, field technicians, and GIS specialists on challenging projects in California and throughout the west. The position will be based out of one of our offices in Sacramento, Pasadena, or South Lake Tahoe. About The Role The position requires a minimum of 5 years of experience and will be dependent on the individual’s qualifications. Regular in‑office work is required; candidates must be based near one of the specified locations. A hybrid work schedule, including both in‑office and remote workdays, is available. The successful candidate will work closely with principal engineers and geomorphologists on a range of hydraulic, fish passage, and restoration design projects throughout California. The role offers opportunities to lead project teams, oversee the design and development of fish passage and habitat restoration designs, and manage project implementation and construction. The candidate will work directly with clients, subconsultants, and other NHC team members. Required Skills and Experience B.S. degree in civil/water resources/environmental engineering or a closely related field with 5+ years of experience. Licensed professional engineer in California, or the ability to obtain a license via testing or reciprocity within one year of employment. Strong understanding of the principles of hydraulic engineering for open channel systems. Experience on civil construction jobs including preparing construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates (PS&E). Experience in projects that include problem evaluation, alternatives analysis, planning, design, and construction. Self‑motivated with competency solving engineering problems and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks to meet tight deadlines. Experience applying hydraulic computer models. Strong technical writing background with demonstrated ability to prepare written reports and communicate effectively. Desired Skills and Experience M.S. or Ph.D. in civil/water resources/environmental engineering/fluvial geomorphology or a closely related field. Experience in the planning, design, and construction of fish passage engineering facilities and restoration projects in riverine environments. Experience with construction observation, reviewing construction submittals, and responding to requests for information. Design drafting and proficiency in CAD. Project management experience that integrates multiple staff and subconsultants. Great Reasons to Join Us Salary Range $90,000 - $125,000 annual (full‑time) depending on experience.
