Work Shift Day (United States of America) Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions Exemplary Practice and Outcomes Perform the Nursing Process (assessment, diagnosis, identification of outcomes, planning, implementation, and evaluation) using evidence‑based practice, analytical and critical thinking to ensure individualized care and coordinate care through effective partnerships. Provide relationship‑based, patient‑centered care that reflects population‑specific characteristics (e.g., age, gender, disease) and adapts service delivery to cultural diversity. Collaborate with patients and significant others through appropriate communication methods (bedside shift reports, interdisciplinary rounds, patient teaching) to keep stakeholders updated and focus on patient goals. Practice using current clinical practice standards. Teamwork and Collaboration Coordinate delivery and documentation of safe, quality patient care that promotes a professional care delivery model, including diverse and inclusive interdisciplinary communication and timely documentation. Demonstrate teamwork by practicing in a fiscally responsible manner that promotes recruitment and retention of all healthcare team members. Participate in and support performance improvement activities, including research utilization, to promote safe, quality patient care and act in shared governance at all system levels. Professional Development and Initiative Complete all initial and ongoing professional competency assessments, mandatory education, and population‑specific education. Serve as a preceptor or mentor for professional nurses, staff, or students across disciplines to develop a qualified future workforce and model professional nursing practice. Evidence‑Based Practice and Research Promote evidence‑based practice, nursing research, and performance improvement in nursing. Participate in value analysis to evaluate patient‑care products and prepare data for decision‑making. Uphold healthcare system policies, procedures, and clinical competencies, including legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements (e.g., TJC Patient Safety Goals). Collect data, pose relevant clinical questions, consult experts, and utilize appropriate resources to address practice questions. Resources and Support Proactively plan for patient care across the continuum while providing direct patient care. Participate in protocol and procedure development when called upon or through self‑initiation in collaboration with care managers and team members to achieve best practice outcomes.
