Duke Raleigh Hospital, A Campus of Duke University Hospital - Inpatient Unit 4700 - Surgical Oncology is seeking a Nursing Care Assistant I/Health Unit Coordinator who embraces Advancing Health Together

Department Summary:

\n

Duke Raleigh Campus's South Pavilion 4700is a 32-bed Stepdown unit that primarily admits patients for pre- and post-operative care. Our main surgical population includes head & neck, cardiothoracic, breast, GI, GYN, urology, vascular and plastics. The unit offers opportunities to practice a wide range of skills, including chest tube and drain management, tube feedings, TPN and central line management, trach care, free flaps, pain management utilizing PCAs and epidurals, complex wound care. It is part of the Duke Cancer Institute, providing comprehensive cancer treatment to patients in Wake County and beyond across both inpatient and ambulatory settings.

Schedule: 

\n

3-12 hour shifts per week - night shift

\n

 

\n

Work Performed:

\n

\n
• Prepare patients, equipment and supplies for specific procedures and provide manual assistance as required.
\n
• Obtain and record patient data for medical records noting and informing RN/LPN of information collected.
\n
• Administer treatment and personal care procedures to patients including, but not limited to, feeding, bathing, hair care, changing clothing, nail care, bed-making, assisting with ambulation, enemas, skin care, and bowel and bladder elimination; provide such additional care as required to meet the personal needs and comfort of assigned patients.
\n
• Participate in teaching activities by reinforcing teaching instructed by RN and/or providers as needed. Assist providers and nurses with physical examinations by helping position patients, changing non-sterile dressing and weighing patients.
\n
• Take and record vital signs, record I&O, and apply ice bags.
\n
• Note and report any changes in patient's condition.
\n
• Turn and position patients, set up and feed patients as necessary, provide patients with fresh drinking water.
\n
• Perform fingersticks for blood glucose testing, with appropriate training, document and notify RN/LPN.
\n
• Assist with admission, discharge, and transportation of patients.
\n
• Follow standard precautions and use personal protective equipment as required.
\n
• Collect, deliver and conduct routine tests on patient specimens.
\n
• Clean assigned area; stock and replenish supplies and equipment as required.
\n
• Participate in own professional development by maintaining required skills validation and attending educational offerings.
\n
• Support the development of other staff and formal learners.
\n
• May also perform clean dressing change for wounds over 48 hours old.
\n
• Perform a variety of clerical tasks involved in operating the organization's patient care information system.
\n
• Acknowledge orders on EMR task list, verify printout and input verified orders to request diets, treatments, nursing services, equipment and diagnostic and laboratory tests and procedures. Assemble and maintain patient charts from admission through discharge.
\n
• Prepare and upload paper documents into the electronic medical record (EMR). Navigate electronic medical record, access patient information, generate reports, schedule appointments and manage task list.
\n
• Assign nursing staff to communication systems. Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

\n

\n
• Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involved in administering routine and special treatments to patients.
\n
• Working knowledge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health and safety precautions applicable to work in a hospital.
\n
• Working knowledge of the organization and physical layout of the hospital.
\n
• Working knowledge of infection control procedures and safety precautions.
\n
• Ability to withstand prolonged standing and walking.
\n
• This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day.
\n
• The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 35 pounds with assistance or appropriate lift equipment.
\n
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
\n
• Ability to document and communicate pertinent information using computer and/or paper documentation tools.
\n
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients and hospital staff.
\n
• Working knowledge of principles and practices of providing non- professional bedside patient care. Pre-employment Physical Capacity Testing may be required.
\n

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications\n

\n
• Currently listed as a Nursing Assistant I (NA I) with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Health Service Regulation with no substantiated findings of abuse, fraud, neglect or misappropriation of property. BCLS certification must be maintained/completed by the end of new hire orientation, which typically takes place during the first week of employment.
