Maintenance Director

General Summary: Under the direction of the Deputy General Manager, the Maintenance Director manages and coordinates all of the activities associated with DPM Maintenance efforts including the rail system, vehicles, and facilities, while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality. Department Maintenance Classification Exempt Supervisor Title Maintenance Director Safety Sensitive: No Remote Status None General Summary: Under the direction of the Deputy General Manager, the Maintenance Director manages and coordinates all of the activities associated with DPM Maintenance efforts including the rail system, vehicles, and facilities, while maintaining the highest level of professionalism and confidentiality. Duties and Responsibilities Manages and administers the activities of all DPM system maintenance requirements accomplishing scheduled, unscheduled and preventative maintenance and repairs Responsibility includes all guideway and fixed facilities, rolling stock and equipment, wayside and communication equipment, shop and miscellaneous test equipment, including the development and periodic review of all related maintenance procedures Manages the activities of the Maintenance Department Plans and coordinates all aspects of equipment maintenance to ensure dependable and safe operations of all DPM equipment and is responsible for troubleshooting, adjusting, calibrations, testing, fabrication, all emergency repairs and quality of repairs to ensure dependable and safe operations of all DPM equipment Oversees damage control and maintenance integrity during emergency conditions Maintains records on failure analysis to organize and improve the maintenance data system Prepares and administers the approved annual DPM Maintenance budget Initiates training courses and establishes skill requirements and verification procedures to maintain a high degree of technical proficiency throughout the Maintenance staff Suggests modifications to upgrade the DPM System Cooperates with the Human Resources Department to ensure that employment records for all Maintenance personnel including time sheets, sick leave, employee evaluation and vacation records are maintained Coordinates all payroll activities for the department Supports all human resources activities for the department Supports the Stores department Oversees all clerical support activities for the department Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Department Interviews and trains employees Plans, assigns, and directs work of Department personnel Appraises performance, rewards and disciplines Department personnel Supervises department personnel in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws Coaches and mentors departmental staff, encouraging professional development Trains departmental staff and new hires on departmental structure and processes Actively solicits feedback from colleagues and supervisor on opportunities for growth and development Retrieves files and documents from the designated maintenance folders and drives on the company network. May utilize approved external programs essential to the maintenance department’s regular operations. Incorporates safety into all aspects of job functions Must work within the established methods, practices, procedures, and policies of the DTC, as well as comply with Roadway Worker Protection requirements and all applicable federal, state, local laws. Creates a safe and inclusive working environment for all team members Collaborates and effectively works with all members of the team Practices open communication and resolves conflicts in a professional manner Performs other duties as assigned Education, Experience and Qualifications Minimum: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering or a closely related field 5 years of experience in management with experience in managing a staff with a wide range of skills Combination of education and experience may substitute for minimum requirements Experience with state of the art transportation systems, preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Essential: Knowledge of civil design and construction techniques of all guideway and station structures Knowledge of the design of mechanical, electromechanical and electronic equipment Knowledge of the maintenance requirements for all system components including electronic, mechanical and electromechanical hardware Knowledge of materials management and labor relations Understanding and ability to work with the theories of electric systems, train control, communications system, power transmission, mechanical systems, heat transfer and electromechanical devices Ability to work with minimal direction Effectively manage a crisis situation Excellent oral and written communication skills Strong analytic skills and ability to troubleshoot situations effectively Self motivated and display strong leadership skills Ability to work with all levels of staff with tact and diplomacy Proficient in Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook, etc.) Detroit Transportation Corporation (“DTC”) is an equal opportunity employer.
