Job Title: Phlebotomist II Job Description

The Phlebotomist II plays a key role in performing blood and specimen collection procedures while supporting workflow improvements, troubleshooting issues, and assisting with training as needed. This position focuses on accurate specimen collection, processing, and documentation in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital environment, ensuring high standards of patient care and regulatory compliance.

• Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• Collect and store specimens, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, in accordance with established procedures and test requirements.
• Explain venipuncture and specimen collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify accuracy before processing.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Package specimens for transport, following protocols to maintain specimen integrity and appropriate temperature requirements.
• Store specimen samples in the correct collection containers or tubes, accurately label them, and follow detailed procedures for transport.
• Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and infection control standards.
• Attend annual department training sessions to maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Record maintenance data and perform decontamination tasks as required to support laboratory operations.
• Update patient information and ensure accurate documentation within laboratory systems.
• Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to respond to inquiries in a professional and timely manner.
• Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues and make recommendations to improve efficiency and quality.
• Support training efforts by demonstrating proper phlebotomy techniques and specimen handling procedures when requested.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced lab or hospital setting.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 2–4 years of overall experience in a related healthcare or laboratory role.
• Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy techniques, including venipuncture with straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Ability to accurately label, process, and store specimens according to established protocols.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure 100% accuracy in matching requisitions to specimen tubes and verifying test orders.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic data entry, documentation, and communication.
• Knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and ability to follow safety and compliance procedures.
• Effective verbal communication skills to clearly explain procedures to patients and respond to telephone inquiries.

• Experience working in a fast-paced clinical, hospital, or laboratory environment.
• Reliability and strong sense of responsibility in handling specimens and patient information.
• Ability to participate in and complete annual department training requirements.
• Comfort with answering patient and provider questions regarding laboratory results and processes.
• Capability to support workflow improvements through troubleshooting and recommending process enhancements.

This is a non-float position based primarily in Commack, with work on Saturday in Hicksville from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The role is situated in a clinical laboratory or hospital environment that requires strict adherence to safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. You will work with standard phlebotomy equipment, including straight needles, butterfly needles, specimen tubes, centrifuges, and computer systems for labeling and documentation. The setting is fast-paced, requiring consistent attention to detail and effective communication with patients and clinical staff.

This is a Contract position based out of Islip, NY.

The pay range for this position is $26.30 - $26.30/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
