Boat Patrol Officer (Seasonal)

Overview The City of South Lake Tahoe's Police Department is recruiting for seasonal/temporary Boat Officers. Typical employment spans from mid‑May until early‑September. Duties include patrolling city waterways and other designated areas; enforcing regulatory laws including boating safety rules; conducting safety inspections; making arrests; issuing citations; responding to emergencies; administering first aid; and performing related tasks as required. Workdays and hours may vary and can include evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Responsibilities Patrol City of South Lake Tahoe waters and other designated areas; enforce City, County, State and Federal laws and regulations; conduct boating safety inspections; make arrests and issue citations; respond to and assist at emergencies; administer first aid; perform related tasks as required. Qualifications Minimum age of 21 years. Knowledge of boating laws and boating safety guidelines. Knowledge of first aid and CPR. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful performance of duties and completion of training. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships. Ability to work without close supervision. Ability to enforce laws, ordinances, rules and regulations fairly and impartially. Ability to operate a power boat safely. Ability to learn and perform work related to operating and maintaining police vehicles, equipment, and tools. Ability to swim at a level necessary for job performance and pass a swim test before appointment. Ability to obtain and maintain valid First Aid and CPR certification. Possession of a valid Driver’s License. Special Qualifications Must possess a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate or be certified as a Level I Reserve; must have successfully completed and graduated from a P.O.S.T. certified Basic Course by date of application. If the applicant has a three‑year or longer break from completion of the basic course, the applicant must also have successfully completed the required basic course waiver process. A copy of the qualifying certificate must be attached to the application. Salary and Classifications Reserve Officer – $52.9502 per hour. Reserve Officer 1 and Senior Annuitant: Must meet and pass required qualifications; must have completed the California POST Regular Basic Course; have the ability to perform general law enforcement duties independently or under supervision; must have completed or be able to complete a standardized Field Training Officer Program; must hold current training certifications or be able to obtain them by the time of appointment. Mission of the Police Reserve Program The purpose of the program is to cooperate with, assist, and augment the Police Department of the City of South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County and the State of California. It recruits, trains, equips, and prepares suitable candidates to become regular City officers. Under orders of the Chief of Police, reserve members render police services when augmentation is essential to public welfare, and assist during emergencies declared within the city.
