Athletic Trainer

Full-time position available on or after September 8, 2026, for Athletics. This position's responsibilities are carried out independently under general supervision. The incumbent is responsible for making clinical judgments regarding athletic injuries and treatment plans and performing the full range of athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency medical care for student-athletes. The position develops and administers rehabilitation programs, coordinates athletic healthcare services and training room operations, and maintains medical, injury, and insurance-related records. The incumbent provides direction and training to athletic training interns, student assistants, and less experienced athletic trainers and serves as a liaison among student-athletes, coaches, physicians, and other healthcare professionals.

Duties include but are not limited to:

• Evaluates athletic injuries and illnesses and develops treatment and rehabilitation plans for student-athletes.
• Administers therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation exercises, taping, bracing, and other injury prevention and treatment techniques.
• Monitors rehabilitation progress and modifies treatment plans based on clinical assessment and physician recommendations.
• Provides emergency medical coverage for practices, competitions, and special events.
• Travels with assigned teams to provide athletic training services and injury management during competition.
• Determines participation status and return-to-play progression in consultation with physicians and other healthcare providers.
• Maintains medical records, injury reports, treatment documentation, insurance information, and related athletic healthcare records.
• Coordinates physician appointments, specialist referrals, diagnostic testing, and follow-up care for student-athletes.
• Communicates injury status, treatment plans, rehabilitation progress, and participation restrictions with coaches and healthcare providers.
• Serves as a liaison between student-athletes, coaches, physicians, and other healthcare professionals regarding athletic healthcare needs.
• Ensures medical documentation is maintained in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, and confidentiality requirements.
• Assists in coordinating daily Sports Medicine Clinic operations, including treatment schedules, athletic training room coverage, and clinical workflows.
• Monitors inventory levels and assists with ordering, maintaining, and replacing medical supplies and equipment.
• Assists in the development and implementation of sports medicine programs, procedures, and services.
• Provides guidance, instruction, and training to athletic training interns, student assistants, and less experienced athletic trainers.
• Assists in coordinating athletic training coverage for practices, competitions, camps, and special events.
• Participates in departmental and sports medicine initiatives to support the health and safety of student-athletes.
• May be required to obtain additional training and/or certification as part of professional development, based on department and/or campus needs, to stay current with industry standards.
• At the direction of appropriate administrator, may provide support to other areas as needed.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: Equivalent to bachelor's degree in athletic training, physical education, kinesiology or related field of study or combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge and abilities.

Experience: Equivalent to two years of experience as a certified Athletic Trainer in a high school or college environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Minimum two (2) years of experience (as a certified athletic trainer) in a high school or Intercollegiate Athletics or related experience.
• Bachelor's degree in athletic training, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, Sports Medicine, Physical Education, or a related field. Candidates certified as Athletic Trainers after 2022 are required to have completed a master's degree to obtain Board of Certification (BOC) certification.
• Prior experience in a CSU or higher education setting.
• Experience providing athletic training services to both women's and men's intercollegiate athletic teams.
• Experience providing athletic training services within an NCAA collegiate athletics program.
• Experience developing and implementing rehabilitation programs for student-athletes participating in multiple sports.
• Experience coordinating care with physicians and healthcare providers, including referrals, diagnostic testing, and return-to-play recommendations.
• Experience utilizing electronic medical record systems to maintain injury, treatment, rehabilitation, and insurance-related documentation.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

• General knowledge of the principles and practices of athletic training including conditioning, injury prevention, injury assessment and rehabilitation.
• Knowledge of full range of therapeutic modalities and their practical use and physiological basis.
• Knowledge of other therapeutic preventions and treatments such as taping, bracing, and massage.
• Knowledge effective use of rehabilitation and exercise equipment; rules, regulations, and guidelines established by the campuses' governing national collegiate athletic associations (e.g., National Collegiate Athletics Association or National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) pertaining to student athletes, their training, sports medicine care, and health and safety.
• Knowledge in Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) standards for handling blood borne pathogens; maintaining medical records, including Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) standards;
• Knowledge of following insurance procedures.
• Ability to effectively assess and evaluate injuries and their severity.
• Ability to develop conditioning and rehabilitation programs and manage and treat injuries; use the full range of appropriate therapeutic modalities and treatments and rehabilitation and exercise equipment to treat and prevent injuries; determine the appropriate referrals for athletes to other health care professionals.
• Ability to recognize life threatening situations and administer the appropriate emergency aid.
• Ability to use a computer to perform medical, insurance and other recordkeeping functions.
• Ability to work in an environment with competing priorities.
• Ability to demonstrate full-to-advanced proficiency in the skills and abilities of the Athletic Trainer I.
• Ability demonstrates the leadership, organizational, and administrative skills involved in coordinating an athletic training and sports medicine program.
• A background check (which may include: fingerprinting, checks of employment records, education records, criminal records, civil records, motor vehicle records, professional licenses, and sex offender registries, as position requires) must be completed satisfactorily before any candidate can begin employment with the CSU.

License or Certifications:

Possess and maintain Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainer. May require a valid California driver's license.

Salary Range:

Anticipated starting salary will be $4,908 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Future increases, including step advancement, are subject to contract negotiations. Full range Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. Full $4,908 (step 1).
