Hiring Range

The University of California, Merced is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The salary range the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $148,895.00 - $293,182.00.

About the Job

As a Staff Physician provides clinical and educational services in support of the overall operation of the Student Health Center. Works independently and under general supervision, administers direct medical care, including diagnosis and treatment, to patients utilizing written protocols as guidelines. Individuals in this position must reflect a balance and understanding of both patient care needs and the efficient operation of the Student Health Center. This position works in collaboration with the Medical Director on issues of professional practice and performance. This position works with the Health Care Team on issues of efficiency, patient flow, teamwork, and patient satisfaction. As the Head Team Physician, provides acute and continuity care to student athletes on and off the field and plays a vital role in coordinating care with a wide range of providers including athletic trainers and other members of the sports medicine program. Provides direct medical oversight of athletic training staff. Serves to develop and enhance clinical and educational services in support of intercollegiate athletics, club sports, athletic trainers and NCAA policy and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

CLINICAL CARE STUDENT HEALTH SERVICES

• Provides direct patient primary care in accordance with standardized procedures and community standards.
• Examines and diagnoses patients, prescribes and administers medical treatment.
• Orders examinations, analyses, x‑rays, physical therapy, and prescription drugs.
• Performs minor surgical procedures.
• Provides continuing care of patients, obtains appropriate consultations and arranges transfers.
• Provides pre‑ and post‑operative primary care of surgical cases.
• Provides patient education to support self‑care and health maintenance.
• Advocates preventative medicine and public health measures.
• Reviews reports, records, and the general progress of patient clinical care.
• Maintains patient records and reports according to professional standards of documentation required by the State, University, and H. Rajender Reddy Student Health Center.
• Prepares reports and related correspondence regarding patient care and condition.
• Respects and maintains confidentiality of patients and staff in all aspects of clinical care, documentation, and correspondence.
• Documents ongoing and significant problems on the Problem List.
• Completes appropriate forms including work‑related injury forms, encounter forms, ancillary forms, and urgent care forms.

INTERCOLLEGIATE ATHLETICS – DIRECT CLINICAL CARE & MEDICAL OVERSIGHT

• Provides comprehensive sports medicine evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of illness and injuries for UC Merced students and intercollegiate athletes.
• Provides consultation to SHS providers, athletic trainers, coaches, and administrators as appropriate.
• Work effectively with providers and experts who oversee safety and performance for student athletes.
• Maintains complete medical records on student athletes, including pre‑participation clearance and follow‑up care.
• Serves as a recognized authority to independently direct medical care and make final treatment decisions for student‑athletes.
• Participates in physician coverage for sports medicine clinics, training room coverage, practices, events, and competitions.
• Creates and maintains policies and procedures for a Sports Medicine manual to support high‑quality care.
• Ensures emergency action plans are up to date and implemented, including EMS coverage.
• Ensures training and education are up to date for athletics personnel.
• Develops and implements improved screening, prevention, and performance enhancement programs.
• Knowledge of NCAA and conference regulations, travel, and sideline coverage.
• Provides medical consultation for drug testing procedures according to NCAA and other regulatory policies.
• Knowledge of HIPAA and FERPA regulations.

Qualifications

• Advanced degree.
• Possession of the legal requirements for the practice of medicine in California as determined by the California Medical Board.
• Completion of an ACGME‑accredited residency training program.
• Completion of an ACGME‑accredited sports medicine fellowship program.
• Three years of experience practicing primary care sports medicine with most clinical activity directly in sports medicine, preferably in a university athletics department.
• Current DEA Certificate.
• Board certification in sports medicine and in a primary care specialty (e.g., Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Pediatrics).
• Knowledge and abilities essential to successful performance of advanced physician duties.
• Advanced clinical skills.
• Knowledge of NCAA and conference regulations, travel, and sideline coverage responsibilities.
• Effective diagnostic and decision‑making skills in complex cases.
• Ability to diagnose patient condition and make treatment recommendations.
• Collaborative communication with patients and clinical staff.
• Experience with electronic medical record systems; computer literate.
• Experience supervising other health care professionals.
• Experience in administration and policy development.
• Experience in sports medicine leadership, preferably with a university athletics department.
• Experience as team physician for college, high school, Paralympic, Olympic, or professional teams.
• Experience working within a college athletics program as a medical provider.
• Experience in college student health.
• Experience with sports ultrasound.
