Paramedic Transport - Ambulance Location: Houston Methodist Hospital, 6565 Fannin St., Houston TX, 77030 Job Ref: JR-4597 Job Shift: Evening Job Type: Full Time (Evenings) FLSA Status: Non-exempt At Houston Methodist, the Paramedic Transport position is responsible for providing appropriate out-of-hospital advanced and basic life support care and transportation of patients in accordance with local, state, national and Houston Methodist’s standards of care. This position assists in the delivery of patient care and services to a diverse patient population and their families under the direction of the Medical Director. The position demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to communicate appropriately, carry out delegated tasks, record data established by policy and procedure, and report observations and patient problems to the Medical Director and/or Supervisor. Qualifications Education High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post‑secondary education, etc.) Experience Three years of ambulance/transport experience functioning as the primary attendant clinically caring for patients in a pre‑hospital setting such as a 911 EMS system or a busy private ambulance service. One year hospital experience preferred. Licenses and Certifications (Required) State license: EMT‑P or LP or EMT‑P Driver license, state licensure (Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation – PSV) BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) ACLS – Advanced Cardiac Life Support or Instructor (AHA) PALS – Pediatric Advanced Life Support or Instructor (AHA) NVCRISIS – Nonviolent Crisis Intervention or Instructor (CPI) – Crisis Prevention Institute Skills and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job, determined through ongoing skills, competency assessments, and performance evaluations. Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English necessary to perform essential functions, especially regarding patient or employee safety. Ability to effectively communicate with patients, physicians, family members, and co‑workers in a customer‑service focused manner. Full knowledge of ambulance equipment and proper use at all times. Knowledgeable of clinical protocols, operational procedures, and safety policies. Demonstrates independence and exercises judgment in interactions with physicians, interprofessional care team, patients, and families. Displays strong time‑management skills. Adapts to multiple ongoing priorities with minimal supervision, including organizing workflows and participating in problem‑solving. Ability to access information within the department and hospital system to support the team as appropriate. Competent computer knowledge; operates multiple computer systems, including EHR, to maintain patient information. Essential Functions People Essential Functions Provides a safe and efficient transfer of patient and patient care information to the receiving personnel at the destination; collaborates with all members of the interprofessional team by actively communicating and reporting pertinent patient data in a clear and timely manner. Interacts with peers, staff and physicians respectfully, responding positively to colleagues’ needs for assistance and partnership; serves as a role model, mentors new paramedics and EMT personnel in transport procedures and readiness, and leads patient decontamination operations. Contributes to improvement of department scores for turnover, retention, and employee satisfaction. Service Essential Functions Role‑models patient and family‑centered care standards and provides direct patient care under physician direction; documents care administered and procedures as required by policies. Conducts a careful examination of patients for signs and symptoms of illness or injury and assists other medical personnel as necessary. Handles patients to and from the ambulance, administering prompt and efficient basic and advanced life support within licensure or certification limits per approved protocols. Contributes to improving department scores for patient satisfaction through peer‑to‑peer accountability (shift handoff/report). Quality and Safety Essential Functions Documents all aspects of patient condition and treatment on patient care records; obtains and records non‑medical patient information as required. Conducts regular ambulance inventory and equipment testing to ensure functionality; upon completion of transport, restores ambulance and equipment to service. Identifies corrective action and improvement activities, impacting quality and safety targets, reporting near misses, and collaborating with the interprofessional team. Operates/drives the ambulance safely, following Houston Methodist Hospital policy and procedure driving guidelines. Finance Essential Functions Uses resources efficiently; assists with patient and staffing needs as competencies allow; manages time effectively and prioritizes tasks. Documents and reports repairs to maintenance departments; maintains orderly environment for supplies and equipment access.
