Companions on a Journey (COJ) is a faith-based nonprofit organization providing ongoing grief support for children, teens, adults, and families. Through support groups, community education, and compassionate presence, we surround the bereaved with HOPE, STRENGTH, and HEALING as they navigate life after loss.

Position Summary
The Director of Program Operations is a vital leadership role, supervising key staff, overseeing bereavement programming, strengthening school and community partnerships, and ensuring high-quality, trauma-informed support services.

Success in this role requires a compassionate, dedicated individual with a heart for serving.

Key Responsibilities

Program Leadership & Delivery

Provide leadership and oversight for COJ’s bereavement programming for children, teens, adults, and families.

● Oversee planning, coordination, and implementation of school-based, adult, and family grief support groups.
● Serve as an active member of COJ’s leadership team and provide regular updates in project management software.
● Collaborate with the marketing and programming team leads to help develop and enhance program materials and resources.
● Develop the annual programming calendar and assist with program budgeting.
● Co-facilitate grief support groups as needed.

Partnerships & Outreach

Cultivate and strengthen relationships with school districts and community partners.

● Oversee school funding partnership initiatives.
● Lead expansion efforts into new schools and districts.
● Represent COJ at community events, informational meetings, and presentations.
● Oversee and support the planning of COJ’s Family Bonfire Night.
● Attend COJ’s major fundraising events, including the golf outing, annual breakfast, and family bonfire.

Staff & Volunteer Supervision

Provide coaching, guidance, oversight, and performance support to program staff.

● Supervise the School-Based Program Manager, Adult & Family Program Manager, and Project Coordinator.
● Ensure accurate timekeeping and adherence to organizational policies and procedures.
● Support the onboarding, training, and appreciation of program volunteers.

Crisis Response & Clinical Support

Oversee crisis response efforts for workplaces, community partners, and schools.

● Coordinate workplace and community crisis services and provide support to the school-based team in delivery of school crisis response.
● Support trauma-informed assessments, referrals, and participant care.
● Collaborate with COJ’s Clinical Supervisor to ensure the appropriate and effective delivery of grief support services.

Program Administration

Ensure program documentation, forms, and resources remain current and organized.

● Support grant reporting, data collection, and program impact measurement.
● Oversee tracking systems for crisis response, educational programming, and training services.
● Partner with marketing and database teams to support communication efforts and data accuracy.

Required Skills & Abilities

● Strong written and verbal communication skills.
● Engaging communicator and effective public presenter.
● Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail.
● Ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders and community partners.
● Self-directed, flexible, and able to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
● Proficiency with technology and database/program management systems.
● Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.

Education & Experience

● Bachelor’s degree in Nonprofit Administration/Management, Business Administration, Organizational Management or related field preferred.
● Minimum of five years of professional experience in a related field.
● Experience leading groups, facilitating programs, or public speaking required.
● Nonprofit experience preferred.
● Experience in grief support, mental health, education, social services, or related fields is strongly preferred.

Physical Requirements

● Ability to sit, stand, walk, and move for extended periods of time.
● Frequent travel to local schools, events, and community locations; reliable transportation is required.
● Ability to lift up to 30 pounds with or without assistance.

Schedule & Work Environment

● Part-time position: 25–30 hours per week.
● Primarily daytime, in-office hours with occasional evening and weekend responsibilities.
● Work is performed at COJ offices, partner schools, and community locations throughout the region.
