Maintenance Worker

Job Title

This entry level position is under minimal to close supervision. Primary emphasis is towards grounds keeping of parks and landscaping planters. Additionally, employees will perform a variety of unskilled, semi-skilled, and skilled tasks in the maintenance, repair and improvement of streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, drainage facilities, signs, traffic lanes and other street-related systems; perform routine maintenance work associated with the installation, repair, and serving of city water, sewer, and storm drain systems; performs routine maintenance of City property, restrooms and maintenance districts; available for shift continuation on an as needed basis; and performs other work or duties as required.

Maintains and cares for park grounds, landscape planters. Including, cultivating, pruning, planting, and transplanting a variety of turf, shrubs, trees, and plants;

Maintains and cares for street medians and landscape strips. Including, cultivating, pruning, planting, and transplanting a variety of shrubs, trees, and plants;

Apply fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers as needed;

Perform journey-level maintenance work in public buildings, structures, grounds, or facilities, including the construction, maintenance, repair and routine cleaning of public buildings, structures, grounds, facilities, playgrounds, etc..

Performs cleanup, litter and garbage removal in parks, landscape planters and other locations;

Installs, maintains, adjusts, schedules and/or repair automatic irrigation controllers;

Operate light, medium and heavy power-driven equipment, such as, push lawn mowers, rider mowers, tractor mowers, backhoe, tractor, dump and other trucks, sprayers, tree chippers, chain saws, power edger's, rototillers, and other equipment;

Maintain, clean, and make minor repairs or adjustments to all tools or equipment used on the job;

Assists or performs concrete construction, such as the repair, installation or replacement of sidewalks, driveways, curbs, gutters, etc.;

Assists or performs repair work; such as patching, removal and the application of asphalt or slurry seal to damaged city streets, alley ways or parking lots;

Assists or performs in the installation, repair, replacement of street signage.

Assists in the installation, replacement, repair and maintenance of public water, wastewater (potential exposure to human waste) and stormwater systems;

Assists or paints traffic directional markings; such as, street lines, crosswalks, safety legends, curb markings, stop bars, etc.;

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization : Requires the ability to utilize equipment, machinery, tools, and supplies used for used in performing essential functions such as; use hand tools, such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, saws, hedge or brush trimmers, or axes. Operate vehicles or powered equipment, such as mowers, tractors, twin-axle vehicles, snow blowers, chainsaws, electric clippers, sod cutters, or pruning saws. Operate light, medium and heavy power-driven equipment, such as, street sweeper, lawn mowers, backhoe, tractor, boom trucks, dump trucks, and other equipment;

Physical Ability : Lifting Heavy: Lifting over 50 pounds, with frequent lifting, pushing and/or carrying weighing over 25 pounds. Climbing: Ascending or descending ladders, ramps, scaffolding, poles, and the like; using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Reaching: Reaching above the shoulders to place and/or retrieve objects. Walking: Ability to walk for prolonged periods of time (usually a minimum of two or more hours per day.) Standing: Ability to stand with little movement for prolonged periods of time (Usually a minimum of two or more hours per day). Agility: Ability to move quickly and easily often including the ability to crawl, stoop or bend.

Chemical or Biological Agents : Regular contact with potentially harmful chemical or biological agents Fumes: Potential inhalation or contact with smoke, vapors, dust, or gasses. Heavy Equipment: Operates various heavy equipment such as tractors, backhoes, graders, trucks, etc. Power Equipment: Operates power tools or other machinery that are potentially hazardous. Work Environment Outdoors: Ability to work outdoors in all types of weather conditions. Work Environment Moving Objects: Ability to work around moving objects, machinery, or vehicles. Work Environment Surfaces: Ability to walk on slippery or uneven surfaces. Confined Space Entry: Ability to work in confined spaces using appropriate safety equipment Heights: Ability to work on surfaces above 20 feet.
