External Research & Development - Technology Innovation Business Development, Director

Amgen seeks a director to lead identification and evaluation of external AI-enabled and technology innovation partnerships across the biotech ecosystem. This role involves assessing emerging technologies, negotiating strategic collaborations, and managing cross-functional diligence teams while supporting the company's research and development strategy. The position is based in South San Francisco or Thousand Oaks, California.
Responsibilities
- Identify and evaluate external AI, digital, HealthTech, and technology innovation opportunities aligned with R&D strategy
- Monitor scientific and competitive trends to uncover high-value partnership opportunities with external organizations
- Lead cross-functional diligence teams to assess scientific merit, feasibility, and business value of opportunities
- Direct business development transactions including negotiations, licensing agreements, and strategic partnership execution
- Present opportunity assessments and transaction strategies to leadership and governance committees for decision-making
Requirements
- Doctorate in science with 4+ years business development experience, or Master's with 7+ years, or Bachelor's with 9+ years
- Expertise in biotechnology, HealthTech, artificial intelligence, data science, or biopharmaceutical research
- Demonstrated experience evaluating, licensing, and executing technology partnerships and transactions
- Understanding of biotech, pharmaceutical, technology, and venture capital ecosystems
- Ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence stakeholders across organizational levels
- Strong scientific thinking, analytical skills, and strategic communication abilities
- Project management skills with capability to manage multiple concurrent priorities
