The Software Managing Engineer is a hands-on leadership role, committing to pair-programming and test-driven development. They own and manage running their application in production and is accountable for the success of their digital products through achieving key performance and customer indicators. The Software Managing Engineer selects, leads, counsels, motivates, sets expectations and evaluates small to medium teams. Additionally, they advise direct reports on administrative policies and procedures, risks, issues, problem resolution, and priorities. This person assists in defining, implementing and prioritizing IT policies, procedures, and best practices. The Software Managing Engineer influences team and business results.ResponsibilitiesLeads the effort of shaping the architecture and design of the productCollaborates on strategy across product portfolios in partnership with product managers, other peers and key stakeholdersLeads and participates in daily site, cross-site, and product team standupsLeads and participates in retrospectives, demonstrating and encouraging each participant to provide feedback with empathyEstablishes continuous integration, continuous delivery, and continuous deployment pipelines and practices and advocates for a strong culture through personal behavior and coaching of all lab roles.Leads and participates in knowledge sharing and contributes to the overall growth of the collective knowledge of the SquareTrade/Allstate engineering communityServes as the anchor of the team and practices technical leadership; helping guide the team in choosing the right technology, solving technical problems, and resolving any technical conflicts within the teamCoaches the team and leads daily practices of using paired programming and test-driven development in writing software and building productsActs as a player coach in leading by example in day to day execution of the build out of technical product capabilitiesLeads and participates in inceptions and iteration planning meetings, infusing backlogs with technical input working in close partnership with the product managerQualificationsBachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field8 or more years of engineering experience2 or more years of management experience with full time software engineersStrong proficiency in Python, Java, Spring Boot, Kafka and microservices frameworkA good understanding of web technologies, such as Angular, SSO, Auth0, event tracking and monitoring toolsExperience with relational databases, such as PosgreSQLComfortable working in a pair-programming (XP) environmentHands-on experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and writing high-quality, testable codeHands on experience coaching and mentoring software engineersNice to HaveExposure to Generative AI technologies and use casesFamiliarity with cloud and hybrid environments, including Azure, AWS, and on-prem systemsKnowledge of CI/CD pipelines and DevOps practicesExperience using GitHub for version control and collaborationExperience in the warranty, insurance, fintech, or e-commerce domainsSupervisory ResponsibilitiesThis job has supervisory dutiesAdditional InformationAt SquareTrade you'll have access to: Medical, dental and vision coverage with network optionality and the ability to contribute to a savings account (HSA or FSA) Up to 4% company match into 401(k) and contributions into your company-sponsored pensionThis position is eligible to participate in the Company’s annual bonus program.
